LONGVIEW BLASTS LUFKIN, 19-0, IN BI-DISTRICT TILT
LLUFKIN - Dick Miller and his rampaging Longview Lobos continued their long winning streak here Friday afternoon at Panther Stadium, turning back a spirited group of Lufkin Panthers, 19 to 0, in a game in which intercepted passes and fumbles were frequent.

Low, grey clouds, hung over the field as 6,000 fans jammed into the park to see two East Texas high-school gridiron greats, Dick Spivey of the Lufkin Pack and dandy Dick Miller of the Lobos. Both seniors, lead their teams in what was named as the high school bi-district class of the day. Staunch supporters of the two flashy backs were still unable to agree who turned in the best game even after the final whistle had blown, since both were by far the outstanding two players on the field.

In long runs of the day, the nod goes to Spivey because of a dazzling race he made down the left side of the field for 57 yards in returning a Longview punt. Miller's best run of the day counted up 47 yards. After he took a lateral from Pouncey, his end teammate, who intercepted a pass late in the final period, Dick ran the ball to the seven but he and his mates were unable to shove it across.

If the death of Marvin Marsha, 17-year-old fullback, two weeks ago from injuries received against Jacksonville was not enough, the mishap that hit the Lufkin crew just before the kickoff sealed it. W. D. Barge, regular left tackle, was warming up with the rest of the squad. He ran for a pass, slipped and fell and broke his collarbone. Not only this but Red Barrow, the Panthers' regular end and an all-district mean for two years, Thursday re-injured his knee in practice and wasn't even suited up. His substitute, R Hicks, suffered a dislocated shoulder during the game.

Longview had their ails too, regular end Morris having injured his knee last week in the Gladewater game and being forced to watch the game from the sidelines.

Lufkin took the opening kickoff and started a fast drive that carried them to the Longview 34 before they were forced to kick. It was the latter part of the first quarter before Dick Miller and his mates got their machine oiled up. He circled left end for 22 yards but fumbled, and Lufkin recovered to end the threat.

Lufkin came right back with a threat, Spivey intercepting Dick Miller's pass and running it 30 to the Longview 41. From there with Spivey leading the way, Lufkin took the ball to the Lobo seven before losing it on downs.

Dick and his brother Hardy Miller took the ball, after Dick intercepted a pass on his own 15 and carried it down the field for a score. Four-man interference paved the way for Dick to run it across from the four-yard stripe. Cantrell's kick was wide.

Trying desperately to score before the half ended, Lufkin even tried the old hidden-ball play. It worked for a 25-yard gain.

Both teams tried desperately in the third quarter and the play was about even during that period, neither team threatening seriously.

Early in the fourth Spivey made his brilliant run of 57 yards in returning a Lufkin kick and the only thing that saved the Lobos from being scored on was Dick Miler "bull-dogging" him from behind. Nobody else but Dick was between Spivey and the goal. There on the 29, a Lufkin pass was intercepted. By Pouncey. He lateraled to Dick after running the ball 50 and Dick raced to the seven before being driven out of bounds.

Unable to score, the ball went over and Lufkin kicked out, Longview taking the ball on the Lufkin 44 and driving from there to score. The touchdown play was LeBus' 15-yard pass to Hardy Miler who ran it seven across the stripe. The kick was good but the play was called back and Longview drew a 15-yard penalty. A try for extra point from the 17-yard stripe fell short.

Not long after, Lufkin was trying passes desperately but was unable to complete them. As Spivey tried to shoot a short one over the center of the line, Sullivan, burly Lobo tackle, reached up and grabbed it, falling down and was tackled almost in his tracks on the Lufkin five. Dick Miller wormed his way over the left side of the line on the next play for a score and then kicked goal to make the score stand 19 to 0.

The game ended shortly afterwards.
