| LONGVIEW - The Longview High Lobos, sparked this time by Hardy Miller instead of his brother, Dandy Dick, came from behind here Saturday for the third time this season and swept aside the heavy Temple Typhoon 19-12 and entered the semi-finals of the state schoolboy race. Eight thousand persons watched the green-shirted Wolves lick the central Texans in the thrill-packed game for their 12th straight win.
Longview Saturday will move to Conroe, where they will meet coach Joe Lagow's Tigers, semifinalists from the deep south who whipped Robstown 47-7 in their quarterfinal game in Conroe Friday. The Lobos Saturday played behind for the first time at home since the Masonic Home game, but they proved they are a great second-half ball club by coming back to score in each of the last two periods and to hold Temple to one first down by rushing during the last two quarters. For the first time this year Dick Miller was stopped, but while the husky, powerful Typoon forwards were checking Dandy Dick, brother Hardy was going to town. Dick failed to score Saturday, something he had not done until then. The game was still in three-cornered pants when the Lobos hopped out into the lead and began to look like a million. A short punt by big Euel Wesson, burly 205-pound Wildcat forward who really was a wildcat Saturday, was taken on the Lobo 25. LeBus passed to Pouncey on the 23 and on the next play Dandy Dick faked a pass and ran the Wildcats' left end for 16 yards to the seven. Two plays natter a yard and Hardy Miller, on a reverse from Lebus, hit left tackle for a touchdown. Cantrell's try at conversion was wide. A long pass from Wesson to Pickett put the Wildcats in scoring position a few minutes later, however, and a tricky lateral to Doss from Wesson off a play that started into the middle of the line, did the trick. Doss went over untouched for a touchdown, but Wesson's try-for-point failed. Early in the second period the Wildcats capitalized on a break and took the lead. A bad pass from center was recovered by Pollak on Longview's five. Wesson hit the middle of the Lobo line three times and picked up four yard and Doss hit the middle for the score. Wesson's boot was blocked by Brannon, making the halftime score 12-6 for Temple. From that point on, the District 11 boys played a losing game. The Wolves, always a second-half ball club that boast a plenty of stamina and power to burn, stopped the Cat attack cold without a first down in the third period and allowed only one from ground plays in the last. A passing flurry netted four others, but they fizzled in the clutch. Late in the third period, the Lobo offense got rolling and Hardy Miller pulled the ball game out of the fire. Chal Daniel, Lobo guard, recovered one of Wesson's fumbles on Temple's 40. LeBus hit right guard for 13 yards and the Miller boys got one apiece in trio at left guard. Then Hardy faded and shot a long pass 40 yards downfield that was hung on a peg waiting for Burandt topic it off in the end zone. Brandt picked it off and the score was 12-12. The pass was perfect and the fleet Lobo wingman was clear when he caught. With the heat on and the chips down, young Ray Cantrell then dusted off his toe and sailed the agate across the goal for a conversion that put the Wolves back in the lead 13-12. Jack McMahon, Lobo center, put the Lobos back in scoring position when he picked off a Temple pass from Doss. On the following drive, Hardy Miller divided the running chores with Lebus to run it to the 3, and Lebus took it over from there. After an offside penalty, Lebus' attempt to carry it over for a conversion was short. That ended the scoring but Temple continued to take a beating when Daniel, Brannon and Burandt threw Wesson and Doss for repeated losses and an alert secondary batted down futile, long-range passes. True to expectations, both clubs resorted greatly to overhead games, Temple throwing 18 and Longview 14. Each completed 7, Longview for a total of 102 yards and Temple for 122. Euel Wesson was the big noise for the Wildcats, bearing the brunt of the Temple rushing attack and playing a great defensive game at tackle. Wesson's bulk made him hard to stop and he was a power on defense. However, also due credit for the fight the Wildcats made were Charles Behrens at tackle and Murrell Lewellen at center. For the Wolves it was a case of the boys functioning as a unit. However, conspicuous in the defensive play were Burandt at end, Daniel and Brannon at guards, and McMahon at center. Hardy Miller's great play was the feature, however. He scored one touchdown, threw a touchdown pass, did a whale of a kicking job and personally stopped two Temple threats with pass interceptions. All of the boys came out of the game without serious injury. |
