GREENIES ROLL UP 57 TO TROUNCE BRUINS
GLADEWATER - Rolling up their largest score of the year and proving they'll be worthy contenders for the bi-district crown at Lufkin next week, the Longview Lobos brought their schedule to a drastic close Thursday by crushing the Bears of Gladewater 57 to 12 before a Turkey Day crowd of 6,000.

This impressive victory made the Pack the undisputed champions of District 9, and used the prognosticators to reaffirm their contention that Longview commands an enviable position in the state schoolboy football championship race.

While the Wolves were running amuck on the nifty Gladewater grid, the Lufkin Panthers were pouring it on the sore backs of the Athens Hornets to the tune of 48 to 6. Inasmuch as the two teams played in Longview last year, Interscholastic League rules demand that the Lobos move on to Angelina county territory in 1937. However, if the Lufkin officials are willing to transfer the contest elsewhere, the league will raise no objection according to well-informed circles.

Dandy Dick Miller was in his stride in the Gladewater game, but his brother Hardy also was in fine form, as were Jordan, LeBus, Cantrell, Fambrough, Brannon, Richardson, McMahon, Daniel and Sullivan. Morse was playing a splendid game until injuries forced him to the bench. The reserves, including Worsha, Grapple, Knox, Pouncey, likewise did themselves proud.

The performance of Burandt was sparkling from start to finish. In addition to breaking up Gladewater plays, he was on the receiving end of passes and did a grand job of carrying the sphere.

As far as Longview fans were concerned, a contest is not complete unless Dandy Dick gets off a long run - and he did not disappoint them Thursday. In the opening period he was pushed back to his own 30-yard line in attempting to make a pass and when he could not find an open man, decided there was only one thing to do, and that he did magnificently - ran 70 yards for a touchdown.

The fleet 145-pounder made two touchdowns in the opening stanza and also came back into the game in the closing quarter to start a 67-yard march that netted a touchdown in three minutes. He carried the ball, accepted a pass and passed to Cantrell for the score. The damage done, he was recalled to the bench to await the Lufkin fracas. But his work was enough inspiration to snap the Pack from their lethargy and they quickly rolled over a brace of touchdowns.

Hardy Miller played his best game of the season. His punting was excellent, and his throwing arm was as accurate as Dizzy Dean's. He tossed four touchdown passes, converted twice, did a marvelous job of putting and lugged the ball like a veteran mail carrier.

A perusal of the various plays (practically all of which appear in this article) will testify to the manner in which Marvin Jordan discharged his duties. Young Don Fambrough and Cantrell were asa steady and as steadfast as the Rock of Gibraltar. The records attest t the important roles they played in the Lobo victory.

Ashton and Lee were the brightest stars in the Gladewater firmament. Ashton was the only veteran from the 1936 team. In addition to calling the game, he turned in an outstanding performance.

The Lobos scored three times in the first, twice in the second, once int eh third and three times in the fourth. The two Gladewater touchdowns came in the third after Coach Shotwell had sent in his reserves. However, t was necessary to shoot back some of the regulars before the Pack could stem the tide.

Lee, flashy guard with a 20-yard pass to Casey, who galloped thirty yards for Gladewater's first touchdown. Fambrough blocked Hunley's kick for extra point. Longview 38, Gladewater 6.

The Bruins wasted little time in making another marker. Hunley kicked over the goal line and the ball was returned to the 20. Longview was penalized five for offside. Hardy Miller clicked off five at left end on the next play but then lost five on an attempted pass. He punted out on his own 37. Lee, Ashton and Hunley made a first down in three plays, the Ashton made another. Lee passed to Casey for two and to Ashton for 10. Ashton, on the next play, hit right tackle and cut back for a touchdown. Hanley failed to kick goal. Longview 38, Gladewater 12.

Then he flipped an 8-yard aerial to Cantrell, who skipped three more yards for dear old Longview high. Cantrell kicked the extra point. Longview 45, Gladewater 12.

Lee's pass was intercepted by Jordan on his own 40 and he ran 20 yards and would have made a touchdown had he not stumbled over one of his mates. However, on the next play Jordan caught Hardy Miller's 15-yard toss and and raced for the pay stripe. Hardy Miller failed to make the extra point. Longview 51, Gladewater 12.

The bears were making a gallant effort to score as the game ended. Ashton made 43-yard run after he had just turned in an 11-yard gain, but this play ended the melee - and the Lobos had earned the right to meet Lufkin next week in the bi-district championship game.
