EAGLES CANCEL GAME
NACOGDOCHES - Hurricane Ike has changed plans for Longview's football team this week.

The Lobos will host Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lobo Stadium. Longview was originally scheduled to play Mont Belvieu Barber's Hill at Stephen F. Austin State's Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches on Friday.

However, Longview director of extracurricular activities Pat Collins said officials from Barber's Hill called him to cancel the game Wednesday morning. Collins said the officials were concerned about their buses possibly traveling in high-wind conditions. Hurricane Ike is projected to hit the Texas coast of the Gulf of Mexico this weekend.

Collins said he was contacted by Evangel officials on Monday. Evangel didn't have an opponent at the time because their schedule opponent, New Iberia (La.) Westgate, had to cancel because of damage New Iberia sustained from Hurricane Gustav earlier this month.

Longview coach John King said the mid-week schedule change presents unusual challenges.

"I guess we better be good at halftime adjustments, since we're halfway through the week," King said. "We've done a lot of the hard physical work, but we'll have to hit the mental adjustments hard."

Longview is 1-1 and ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press' Class 4A state poll. Evangel Christian is 1-0 after a 47-9 win over Springdale (Ark.) Shiloh Christian last week.

Longview and Evangel played every season from 2001 to 2005. The Lobos hold a 4-1 edge in the series, winning the last four meetings.

"God must have a sense of humor giving us Longview," Bachman said. "At the end of the day though, we're familiar with the Longview program and what they bring."

All tickets for the Longview-Evangel game will be general admission. Tickets are available at the Longview ISD athletic office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Friday.

Advanced ticket sales are $5 each for adults, $3 for children. All tickets are $6 each at the gate.
