LOBOS SPRINT PAST 'CATS
HALLSVILLE - The No. 3 ranked Longview Lobos blanked Hallsville, 45-0, in possibly the best defensive output of this season for the Lobos. The Lobos held Hallsville to 94 total yards and did not allow a pass reception while allowing just four first downs. It is the third time in the past four weeks Longview has shut out its opponent.

"It was a good effort on defense. I don't know if it was our best effort," Longview coach John King said. "We didn't give up big plays. Our pass defense had good pressure on their quarterback and good coverage."

History will show Longview continued a championship streak. Longview (8-1, 5-0 in District 13-4A) clinched at least a share of the 13-4A title, the sixth consecutive season the Lobos can claim a district championship. Hallsville dropped to 3-5, 2-2.

The Lobos had nine tackles for losses, two by Jeremiah Farley. Longview forced six fumbles, recovering three thanks to Thomas Jones, Logan Washington and Javorus Poole. The Lobo defense also had an interception by LaDarius Brooks, who has three interceptions in the past two weeks.

Longview's offense responded to their defensive effort with balance, rushing for 234 yards while passing for 190 yards. Longview receiver LaDarrin Robertson may have had his best game as a Lobo, making six receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown, a 20-yard scoring grab from Rayshone McGee to extend Longview's lead to 38-0 in the third quarter. Longview quarterback duo of McGee and Aaron Johnson passed for 95 yards each.

Longview took a lead it wouldn't relinquish on the first play of the game. Carey Fortson returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. The Lobos marched 82 yards on its their second drive, capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Johnson.

The Bobcats never threatened Longview's lead in the first half because Longview's defense practically shut Hallsville down. Hallsville had 53 total yards in the first half, 54 from running back Quantrail Johnson, with three first downs and no completed passes. Johnson finished with 92 of Hallsville's 94 total yards on 23 carries.

Early in the second quarter however, Longview appeared to be on the end of bad news. During a 12-yard reception from Aaron Johnson, fullback Keylon Shaw appeared to suffer a left-knee injury and did not return. Shaw had 39 total yards on five touches on Friday, after rushing for 118 yards and two touchdowns last week against Marshall.

The Lobos rallied when Chris Weaver stopped Quantrail Johnson for a four-yard loss on a fourth-and-one at the Hallsville 36-yard line. Two plays later, Da'Cedric Hunt sprinted in from 23 yards to help give Longview a 21-0 lead with 4:42 left in the second quarter. Hunt led Longview with 67 yards for the game on eight carries.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Lobos forced Eric Mitchell to fumble and Washington recovered for the Lobos at the Hallsville 22-yard line. This set up a five-yard touchdown run by Tyler McCray, giving the Lobos a 28-0 halftime lead. The Lobos almost added to its lead when Kyle Jenkins appeared to kick a 46-yard field goal to end the first half, but the play was called back because of illegal procedure and the Lobos had an incompletion to end the first half.

McGee was 5-for-7 for 75 yards passing in the first half for the Lobos.

Longview concludes its regular season playing crosstown rival Pine Tree at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler. Hallsville travels to Texarkana to play Texas High at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
