LOBOS HANG ON FOR 29TH DISTRICT WIN IN A ROW
TEXARKANA - Borrowing a baseball term, Longview's offense was a closer on Friday, saving a win in the process.

The Lobos had two long drives in the second half helping them get a key touchdown and run out the clock in a 28-25 win over Texas High in the District 13-4A opener for both teams at Tiger Stadium at Grim Park. Texas High pulled within three points when quarterback Nathan Sorenson found Jojo Thurman for an 18-yard touchdown pass, then Logan Preston on a two-point conversion with 7:28 remaining.

The Tigers would never get the ball back. The Lobos ground out five first downs over 82 yards before kneeling on the ball at the Texas High five-yard line.

The most critical play was a play-action, eight-yard run by quarterback Aaron Johnson on a third-and-four at the Texas High 23-yard line.

Longview, ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press' Class 4A state poll, improves to 4-1, 1-0 in 13-4A and stretched its winning streak in district games to 29. Texas High drops to 2-2, 0-1.

Longview's offense was needed because Texas High scratched back with long drives of their own. Texas High cut the lead to 21-17 on 12-yard touchdown pass from Sorenson to Adams with 5:20 left in the third quarter, capping an 80-yard drive to open the second half.

Longview countered with a 66-yard drive capped by a one-yard touchdown plunge by Da'Cedric Hunt with 42.9 seconds left in the third quarter, ending a 66-yard drive. Longview converted a fourth-and-one on its own 43-yard line on the drive on a three-yard run by Hunt. Thurman's touchdown ended an 84-yard drive by Texas High.

"I think this win is a salute to our offense. I feel like we controlled the line of scrimmage and we only punted once," Longview coach John King said. "I knew Texas High was capable of long drives, but we had chances to stop them. They converted some third-and-10 plays."

The first half featured a team versus individual battle: Longview's offense against Texas High running back Kody Sutton.

On the third play from scrimmage, Longview fullback Keylon Shaw took a carry up the middle and ran 52 yards for a touchdown. Shaw had a huge first half, gaining 111 yards on five carries. Shaw led Longview with 114 yards rushing for the game on six carries.

The Lobos drove inside Texas High's 10-yard line on its second possession, but the drive stalled and a 25-yard field goal attempt by Kyle Jenkins was wide right. Texas High countered with a 62-yard drive capped by a 36-yard field goal by Josh Moore, his sixth field goal in as many attempts this season, with 48.2 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Sutton had 104 yards rushing in the first half on 20 carries and drove Texas High inside the Longview 20-yard line, but the drive ended when Longview safety Darren Brown forced Sutton to fumble and LaDarius Brooks recovered for the Lobos at the Longview nine-yard line with 2:05 left in the second quarter.

On the next play however, Longview running back Tyler McCray fumbled on a hard hit by a pair of Tigers and Tarell Beasley recovered at the Longview 21-yard line. This set up a five-yard touchdown pass from Sorenson to Adams with 1:02 remaining in the first half.

From this potentially demoralizing situation however, the Lobos rebounded. Longview needed just four plays to cover 69 yards with Johnson using a draw for a 17-yard touchdown run with 12.1 seconds left in the first half, helping give Longview a 21-10 halftime lead. Johnson finished with 170 total yards of offense.

Hunt finished with 65 yards rushing. McCray had 45 yards rushing on nine carries, but left the game after his fumble and did not return. LaDarrin Robertson had five receptions for 56 yards.

Sutton finished with 133 yards rushing on 32 carries while Sorenson - who has verbally committed to Oklahoma State - was 8-for-10 passing for 100 yards, adding 42 yards rushing.
