| LONGVIEW - Longview head football coach John King said on Thursday his team will likely forfeit a Sept. 12 victory over Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian because of the use of an ineligible player.
Longview associate head coach Oscar Wilson said the player is ineligible because it is his fifth year attending Longview High School. Wilson said age and credit hours appeared to be in order for the ineligible player. King declined to identify the player. King said the ineligible player entered the 52-22 Longview victory over Evangel for one play in the fourth quarter, a point in which victory for the Lobos was assured. King said he found out the player might have been ineligible on Wednesday and passed along the information to Longview ISD Director of extracurricular activities Pat Collins. Collins presented the information to the District 13-4A executive committee and the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of public high school sports in Texas, on Thursday. King said the ineligible player no longer participates with the Longview football team. "I did what I thought was right. It was an error on our part," King said. "I told the team I made a mistake that shouldn't have happened and apologized. My biggest concern is for the kids." With a forfeit, Longview - ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press' Class 4A state poll - would drop to 3-2, but remains 1-0 in District 13-4A. The Lobos play at Sulphur Springs (5-0, 1-0) - ranked No. 7 in the 4A state poll - at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Evangel would improve to 2-2 with the forfeit victory. "The best thing we can do is get it over with, admit the error and don't hide anything," King said. |

| LONGVIEW - Longview's football team made short work of a team they played on short notice Friday.
Sparked by a strong game of rushing, and a vicious pass rush, the Lobos rolled to a 52-22 victory over Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian, 52-22, at Lobo Stadium. Longview (2-1) rated No. 8 in the Associated Press' Class 4A state poll, steamrolled to 326 yards on the ground, led by 133 yards and two touchdowns from Montario Harris, who had a 76-yard touchdown run with 4:26 remaining in the third quarter to give the Lobos a 38-0 lead. Longview's pass rush produced 11 sacks - two each by Bubba Factor, Chris Knighton and Darius Watters, for 115 yards in losses. The Lobo defense was in contention for its second consecutive shutout until Evangel had a 10-yard touchdown pass from Dez Duron to Quinn Giles 12 seconds into the fourth quarter. Evangel (1-1), ranked No. 2 in the AP's Louisiana Class 2A state poll, had 293 yards of offense, but the Eagles scored 22 points and 146 total yards in the fourth quarter, playing their first-string players against Longview's reserves. Duron passed for 293 yards, 187 in the second half. Evangel was named Longview's opponent Wednesday morning, after Mont Belvieu Barber's Hill had backed out from a game scheduled Friday in Nacogdoches because of possible hazardous travel conditions caused by Hurricane Ike. Longview's special teams had a strong first half, starting with the first play of the game. Tyler McCray returned the opening kickoff 71 yards, setting up his own nine-yard touchdown run with 9:57 left in the first quarter. McCary had 88 yards rushing on 10 carries, all in the first half. The Lobos extended their lead to 14-0 on its first pass completion of the game, a 20-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Johnson to Cody Taylor on a fourth-and-six play with 8:15 left in the second quarter. After passing for 18 yards last week, Johnson was 4-for-10 for 108 yards and two touchdowns, including a 40-yard strike to Carey Fortson in the third quarter. After Taylor's touchdown, Longview's Alone Darden blocked a William Russ punt at the Evangel 26-yard line, setting up a two-yard touchdown plunge by Harris with 4:33 left in the first half. The Lobos converted their first field goal attempt of the year, a 25-yarder by Kyle Jenkins as time expired at the end of the first half, giving the Lobos a 24-0 halftime lead. Longview's defense was ruthless in the first half, holding Evangel to 44 total yards. Evangel was knocked back for -62 yards on the ground in the first half thanks to six sacks by the Lobos, including both of Vactor's sacks. Evangel receiver Cerderrick Tyson had 179 total yards of offense and a touchdown, 135 yards in the second half. Longview hosts Lufkin at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Lobo Stadium. Lufkin hosts Nacogdoches 7 p.m. Monday in a rescheduling of a game that was postponed on Friday because of Hurricane Ike. |
