| LONGVIEW - Speedy Longview kick returner-cornerback Chris Lacy may not return a kick for a touchdown this season, but he has definitely surpassed his quota of fumble returns for paydirt this season.
Lacy's latest fumble of fortune came with 6:54 left in the third quarter, when he returned a Juan McHenry fumble 89 yards for a touchdown. This put Longview ahead for good in the Lobos' 29-21 homecoming win over Dallas Carter on Friday before 9,500 spectators at Lobo Stadium. Lacy's fumble return gave Longview a 22-21 lead. His first fumble return of the season came on Sept. 2 against West Monroe (La.), but unlike the loss in that game the Lobos won this one. They have won three straight. Carter (3-2) suffered its second straight loss. Longview safety Keith Peters made the hit that forced McHenry's fumble. "It went right to me. It didn't even bounce. Keith Peters made the play," Lacy said. "I don't know what it is about me and fumble returns. Any kind of a return for a touchdown is good." Longview also discovered a go-to receiver on Friday as Travrus Brown had four receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown. Brown's touchdown came on Longview's first play from scrimmage in the third quarter - a 65-yard, fade-route pass from D'Marcus Miles. Brown also had a 35-yard touchdown run off a double reverse in the first half, making up for dropping a wide-open pass in the end zone on Longview's first drive of the game, forcing the Lobos to settle for a field goal. "I was kind of down when I dropped that pass, but my teammates picked me back up," Brown said. "The touchdown pass was on a move (assistant) Coach (Steve) Brown taught me. I faked outside, then went back inside. "This was the type of game I was looking for to let people know who I am and what I can do." Longview also got 110 yards and a touchdown rushing for Jazmon Moon, while Antajuan Guinn and Ricardo Buchanan had three tackles each for losses for the Lobos on defense. Carter had 203 yards rushing as a team, led by 89 by McHenry. But Carter also had four fumbles, losing two. Longview drove 58 yards on its first drive, but Brown had his drop on a third-and-goal at the Carter five-yard line and the Lobos settled for a 22-yard field goal by Zach Decker. Brown then had his double reverse for a touchdown, giving Longview a 10-0 lead with 3:52 left in the first quarter. But the momentum of the first half changed on the next play, when Jarvis Phillips returned the kickoff 42 yards. This set up a 47-yard touchdown run by McHenry. Carter had a fourth-and-18 on its next drive, but quarterback Charles Lewis scrambled 18 yards for a first down. Two plays later, Jeremy Watts ran in five yards for a touchdown, giving Carter a 14-10 lead with 10:13 left in the second quarter. A trick play aided Longview on its next drive, as Moon took a fake punt and rushed 13 yards on a fourth-and-six at the Longview 44-yard line. Moon capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 5:54 left in the second quarter. Longview cornerback Sherman Rosborough recovered a Michael Hicks fumble at the Carter 25-yard line with 4:32 left in the first half, but three plays later, Watts intercepted a deflected D'Marcus Miles pass. Carter took advantage of the turnover to drive 57 yards, capped by a 12-yard touchdown run by McHenry with 1:28 left in the first half, giving the Cowboys a 21-16 halftime lead. Rosborough also had an interception with 59 seconds left in the game to salt away the win for the Lobos. Longview plays at Lufkin on Thursday. |
