LOBOS TROUNCE TOP RANKED WEST MONROE
SHREVEPORT - The Mean Green unit can take a well-deserved bow.

Vondrell McGee and Chris Ivory combined for 248 yards and three touchdowns, then the Longview defense took over as the Lobos blanked the West Monroe Rebels, 21-0, Saturday night in the Ark-La-Tex Classic Border Bash at Independent Stadium.

Longview improves to 2-0 on the young season, while West Monroe falls in its 2005 season-opener. The game was the third time the two teams had ever met, but the first encounter in 45 years. The Rebels won the two earlier games in 1959 (13-7) and 1960 (8-6).

McGee went over 100 yards for the second week in a row, rushing for 157 on 24 carries with touchdown runs of 13 and 18 yards, the final score coming with 46 seconds left in the contest to seal the deal.

Ivory rumbled for 91 yards on 14 carries. His third touchdown of the season ended a 63-yard, six-play drive on Longview's opening drive of the second half. He broke through on a 8-yard carry.

But it was the defense that kept the goose egg on the scoreboard for West Monroe. Laderrick Satterwhite had in interception, and Letroy Ayers and Jarvis Pippins both forced the ball over on downs with huge plays. Longview forced the Rebels into turning the ball over four times in the ball game.

If not for a rash of penalties, mostly on the offense side of the football, the margin of victory might have been larger. A penalty denied Satterwhite an interception return for a score after he stepped in front of a Steven Ensminger pass on second-and goal from the Lobo 8 and headed the other direction.

Ayres quickly filled the Gap with West Monroe facing fourth and one from its own 48. He dropped the Rebels Jason Robinson for a one-yard loss. Pippins got his hands up to tip away a pass in the third quarter as West Monroe faced fourth-and-8 at the Longview 48.

Longview outgained West Monroe 374-151. Most of the yardage came on the ground with 292 yards on 46 attempts. However, the Lobos were flagged eight times for 86 yards.

Longview took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards in 16 plays with McGee finishing it off on a 13-yard burst up the middle. Zach Decker added the extra point, and the Lobos led 7-0 with 7:50 to play in the first quarter.

The Lobo drive consumed more than 4 minutes. They were also 5-for-5 on third-down conversions, which included key pickups of third-and-7 and third-and-9 as Carlin Freeman found David Robinson for 11 yards and Adrian Reese for 15, respectively.

The Freeman-to Reese third-down conversion kept the drive alive as Longview moved from the West Monroe 23 to the 8. However, a procedure penalty moved the ball backed to the 13 where McGee high-stepped his way into the end zone.

Longview dominated the first half, but struggled through a number of penalties that resulted in missed opportunities.

The Lobos had a first-and-goal from the 2, with McGee apparently breaking into the end zone for his second score. However, it was wiped out by a holding call. The 13-play drive would stall out at the 4, bringing in Decker who slid his 20-yard field goal try wide to the left.

Again, Longview maintained possession by twice converting on third down. Freeman connected with Robinson for 7 yards for a first down, and the senior later converted on a short-yardage carry.

A costly penalty nullified Longview's second series of the ball game. Facing fourth-and-9, Freeman went back to punt from the Rebel 48, took the snap and fired a completion to Calvin Jackson inside the 15. But a block below the knees resulted in a flag, negating the play and forcing the Lobos to punt.

West Monroe's best drive of the half came on its initial possession as it reached the Longview 21. However, Tony Johnson sacked Ensminger for a 10-yard loss and Cartez Beall made a sure tackle on a fourth-down pass play to turn the ball back over to the Lobos on downs.
