MESQUITE - Vondrell McGee produced his own version of lightning with a career-high 269 yards and four touchdowns as Longview defeated Mesquite Horn 42-14 in a weather-delayed game Friday night at E.B. Hanby Stadium.
The game was stopped with 8:21 remaining in the second quarter, because of severe lightning as officials sent both teams to their dressing room. The thunderstorm caused a one hour and 35-minute delay. A steady rain fell throughout after both teams returned to the field. Longview left the field with a 14-0 lead on a pair of McGee touchdowns. The junior tailback scored on runs of 20, 19, 88 and 57 yards. He needed just nine carries to go over 200 yards for the second time this season. The Lobos improve to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in District 12-5A play. Horn dropped to 2-4 and 1-1. Horn's Mon Williams, who came into the game leading the district in rushing, scored both touchdowns on runs of 4 and 29 yards as he finished with 166 on 37 carries. The Jaguars totalled 50 plays on the ground. Longview also got touchdowns from Adrian Brooks and Chris Ivory. Brooks scored on an 8-yard carry and Ivory ran in from 37 yards. Ivory finished with 72 yards on eight carries. The Lobos totalled 382 yards on the ground. The Lobos didn't mount many long drives, scoring twice on two plays and on two possessions that took just one play. The defense also came away with a pair of interceptions - one each by DeKendrick Campbell and Corderra Hunter. The Campbell interception came a yard deep in the end zone that stopped a Jaguar drive that had reached the Lobo 8. McGee got Longview's offense going with a 63-yarder to set up his first touchdown run of 20 yards as the Lobos took a 14-0 lead in the final minute of the first quarter. Longview went three-and-out on its first series, then picked up a first down in its second possession before stalling out again. Finally on the third series, McGee took off for a 63-yard run to the Horn 11 on second-and-12 after losing two yards on the previous play. Three plays later, the junior tailback rumbled into the zone with 59 seconds showing on the game clock. Willie Cloyd added the extra point. The Jaguars were also flagged for a personal foul after McGee's touchdown, which was assessed on the ensuing kickoff. Lobo kicker Jonathan Tidmore kicked off from the Horn 45, angling an onside attempt that Jarvis Pippins caught in the air at the 24. Two plays later, McGee scored his second touchdown of the game, this time from 19 yards as Longview put up 14 points in a span of 54 seconds. As the first quarter ended, McGee already had 104 yards on five carries. Horn crossed midfield once in the first quarter, reaching the Lobo 41 before the Jaguars were forced to punt. |
