COLONELS STUN LOBOS IN OVERTIME
WACO - Marcus Applewhite stepped infront of a Carlin Freeman pass and South Garland put a quick end to Longview's postseason with a stunning 14-7 bi-district victory in overtime here Saturday on a wet, overcast afternoon at Waco ISD Stadium.

The Colonels, out of District 12-5A, improve to 9-2 and advance to face Dallas Carter in a Region II Class 5A Division II area playoff next week. Longview, which was making its third straight postseason appearance, ends it season at 7-4.

South Garland took possession to start the overtime, and on thrid-and-9 from the 24-yard line Jordan Reever found Lance Colburn in the left front corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Matthew Slaughter booter the extra point. The Lobos had won the toss, but opted to go on defense first.

Longview, which struggled all day with just 127 yards total offense, never got untracked in the overtime either as the Lobos faced third-and-10 at the 23 when Freeman attempted a pass toward Durrell Horne near the left sideline. The throw was high and Colburn picked it off and raced in front of the Colonels' bench as the celebration on the home side of the stadium began

The Lobos struggled on offense all day, much like they had done in recent weeks despite winning two of their last three games to end the regular season. Quincy Grant, who had thrown for 1,271 yards, tore his ACL in the second game with John Tyler, and leading receiver Malcolm Kelly (27-826 yards, 6 TD) was academically ineligible for Saturday's ballgame.

Longview finished with 119 yards on the ground, most of that coming during a drive early in the fourth quarter. However, that series ended at the South Garland 39 as the Lobos were forced to punt It was Justin Rector's eighth punt of the ball game.

Freeman was just 1 of 7 passing for eight yards, and the interception. Rogers Taylor had the lone catch early in the second half. In the first half, Longview had more penalty yardage (7-50) than total yards (43).

The Lobos' only touchdown was the result of a special teams play as Robert Henson partially blocked a punt by South Garland's Derek Kent. Adrian Brooks caught the ball in the air and returned it to the Colonel 5 yard line. It took just one play for Jerrell Williams to score his 13th touchdown of the season.

Ryan Howard added the PAT and the Lobos led 7-0 with 3:43 left in the third quarter. the Lobo defense had shut down Reever and the Colonels' pasing attack for most of the ball game. South Garland managed only 63 yards rushing.

The touchdown ended a streak of six consecutive quarters without a touchdown for the Lobos, who were shutout 14-0 by Lufkin to close out 11-5A play.

South Garland knotted the game at the 9:53 mark of the fourth quarter as Reever and James Alford hooked up for eight yards. The drive by the Colonels covered 84 yards in 15 plays. Reever, who was just 5 of 12 for 11 yards at halftime, completed five passes for 46 yards, while connective with four different receivers.

The Colonels' signal-caller was even briefly sidelined for a playoff after being laid out on the turf by Henson on a quarterback keeper, which also drew a penalty flag for a late hit by the Lobo linebacker.

Reever finished the game by completing 20 of 33 passes for 142 yards. He also had one interception, which was picked off by Keaton Daniels - his third of the season - to thwart the Colonels' first drive of the game as they had reached the Lobo 17.

Longview did have one final march in regulation as the Lobo went from their own 37 to the South Garland 37-yard line in the closing minute. Howard came on to attempt what would have been a school-record 54-yard field goal. The kick had the distance, but was just wide to the right with two seconds remaining.
