| LUFKIN - The streak lives on as the Lufkin Panthers extended their consecutive number of wins over Longview to seven straight with a dominating 35-21 victory here Friday night at Abe Martin Stadium.
The Panthers, who move solidly into the driver's seat in District 11-5A at 3-0, rolled up 35 points in the second quarter to pull away as they improved to 7-0. They used a couple of big plays and a failed Longview attempt on fourth down to break this game open early. Longview (5-2, 1-2) made the game look closer with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns as Quincy Grant connected with Tate Casey and Malcolm Kelly. Casey, who had a season-high four receptions for 87 yards, scored on a 29-yard catch-and-run with 2:29 left in th game, and Kelly (3-57) hauled in a 33-yarder at the 1:36 mark for the Lobos' second score of the frame. Grant finished with 191 yards on 10 of 23 completions through the air. Lufkin's Jacovery Smallwood and Ashford Ayers, who had been the Panther starter before injuring a toe two weeks ago, combined to complete 11 of 18 for 216 yards. Smallwood played the first half, with Ayers playing the third and fourth quarters. Jorvorskie Lane scored three touchdowns - two on the ground and one on a pass - as the district's leading rusher gained only 53 yards on 15 carries. It was the first time this season the Lufkin running back failed to go over 100 yards rushing in a game. Lufkin made it look easy as the Panthers ran off 25 pints in the second quarter to take a commanding 32-7 lead into the dressing room at halftime. A 79-yard run by E.J. Shankle, Lane's catch-and-run for 65 yards on a screen pass from Smallwood on back-to-back Lufkin possessions broke open a 7-7 game. The Panthers got onto the scoreboard first as Keaton Daniels fumbled a fair catch on a Michael White punt at the Lobo 16. Lane ran three straight plays, covering 13, 2 and 1-yard, with the last carrying him into the end zone at the 6:53 mark. Longview, though, answered right back with a 75-yard, 14-play drive as Jerrel Williams scored on a 5-yard run with 54 seconds remaining in the first quarter. A 25-yard Grant to Casey play, a 10-yard option carry by Williams on third-and-five and a toss to Kelly for 18 yards moved the ball into Lufkin territory. The Lobos did have to convert a fourth-and-one at the Panther 9 as Grant picked up the necessary yardage. Two plays later, Williams scored his 11th rushing touchdown of the season. But it was all Lufkin after that. After a penalty pinned the Panthers back at their own 8, they got out from under their goal posts with a first down at the 18. Facing third-and-seven from the 21, Smallwood rolled to his right and pitched out to Shankle who sprinted up the right sideline and then cut across at midfield and raced untouched into the end zone. A pass from Smallwood to Lane, who broke the plane of the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 15-7 advantage. Lufkin got the ball back about a minute later after the Panther defense held, forcing a punt. Three straight penalties would move the Panthers back to their own 35, where on third-and-19, Smallwood got the Longview defense to commit and hit Lane for a screen pass that turned into a 65-yard scoring play. Leading 22-7, the Panthers went back to work with 7:33 remaining after the Lobos attempted to pick up a first down at their own 26. Grant's pass to Rogers Taylor on fourth-and-three was overthrown and Lufkin took over on downs. It took two plays for the Panthers to reach the end zone as Lane scored his third touchdown of the opening half, this time coming on an 8-yard carry. Lane had 45 yards on 11 carries in the first half. Lufkin would add a 38-yard field goal by Michael White with three seconds showing before halftime. He would post the Panthers' only points of the second half with a 27-yard field goal at the 11:11 mark of the fourth quarter, which made it 35-7 at the time. |
