BLOWN LEAD COSTS LOBOS
LONGVIEW - Longview saw a 14-3 lead evaporate in the second half as Tyler Lee held the Lobos scoreless en route to scoring 15 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters to nab an 18-14 win before a standing-room-only Homecoming crowd Friday night at Lobo Stadium.

The Lobos fall to 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in District 11-5A. Lee, which dropped it district opener a week ago to top-ranked Lufkin, improves to 5-1 and 1-1.

Touchdowns by Jerrel Williams and Quincy Grant in the first half enabled the Lobos to build their early. Austin Stanley also kicked a field goal for Lee for its only score of the opening half.

But in the second half, the Red Raiders scored on their opening possession as Keondra Smith finished off a nine-play, 76-yard drive with a 3-yard run. Lee then went for the two-point conversion as Preston Hill completed the short pass to Jonah Murphy in the end zone for a 14-11 deficit.

The Red Raiders then took their first lead of the ballgame at the 8:35 mark of the fourth quarter as Hill snuck across from one-yard out. The drive covered 71 yards in 15 plays that saw Hill convert a crucial pass on third-and-eight and Longview get penalized for roughing the passer.

Lee had an opportunity to stretch the lead further on the Lobos' next possession when Quincy Grant was intercepted for the second time in the game - this time at the Longview 16. But, the Lobo defense held and Stanley's 29-yard field goal was wide to the right with 6:48 to play.

After floundering on offense for most of the second half, the Lobos made one final drive toward victory, trailing 18-14 with 2:49 remaining. Starting at their own 16, Grant hit Tate Casey for 19 yards and a first down, and then completed a 41-yard pass to Malcolm Kelly at the Lee 25.

The Lobos would reach the 20 as Grant and Kelly connected for the fourth time in the game. Grant was 7 of 18 for 188 yards, while Kelly caught four passes for 116.

Penalties would prove costly in the final minute of play as Longview was flagged three times for illegal procedure. Back-to-back penalties left the Lobos facing fourth-and-16 from their own 30 after a fade route to Kelly fell incomplete in the back right-hand corner of the end zone.

Longview's perfect season ended as Kelly couldn't bring down a pass in the end zone between two Lee defenders. The Red Raiders then took over and ran out the final 35 seconds.

Lee was paced by the running of Tyrone Ross, who rushed for 125 yards on 24 carries. Hill completed 13 of 21 pass attempts for 124 yards, although he was intercepted twice. Odova Stevens was the top receiver for the Red Raiders with three catches for 37 yards.

Williams paced the Lobos' ground game with 95 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Chris Jones managed just 21 yards on six carries. The Lobos ground out just 119 yards as a team.

Defensively, Terrence McGee and Keaton Daniels came away with interceptions - Daniels' pick was his second of the season.

Longview took the opening possession of the game after Lee won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Lobos marched 80 yards in six plays.

Grant scrambled for 11 yards on the first play from scrimmage, then he completed a 29-yard pass to Kelly as the Lobos moved into Lee territory. After a Lee penalty, Longview went to work on the ground as Williams picked up 10 yards, Jones 12, Williams 4 and then the senior rambled the final 15 into the end zone. Ryan Howard tacked on the extra point with 9:29 showing in the first quarter.

Longview would struggle against Lee's defense until midway through the second quarter as Grant was intercepted and Howard was tackled on a punt attempt after a high snap at his own 21. Stanley would get the Red Raiders on the scoreboard with a 31-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

McGee's interception at the Lobo 16 would stall another Lobo drive.

Two huge passes - a 37-yarder from Grant to Kelly, and then 44 yards to Rogers Taylor moved the Lobos to the Lee 14. Williams gained 6 yards, and the Red Raiders were also flagged for a personal foul, giving Longview a first-and-goal on 4. After Williams gained another three yards, Grant went over from the one as the Lobos grabbed a 14-3 lead with 4:20 left before halftime.

Longview, which came into the game ranked No. 4 in the state, travels to Lufkin next Friday to face the No. 1 Panthers, who routed John Tyler 44-14 Friday at Rose Stadium in Tyler. Lee - ranked ninth in this week's Associated Press poll - takes on cross-town rival JT next week.
