LOBOS GROUND EAGLES, 31-28
LONGVIEW - Alex Cammack kicked the go ahead score, Marcus Maxey preserved the win with an interception and head coach Pat Collins was drenched with a victory shower of ice water as the Longview Lobos knocked off nationally-ranked and defending Louisiana Class 5A State Champion Evangel Christian Academy, 31-28 Friday night before a sellout corwd of 10,500 at Lobo Stadium.

A year ago, the Lobos upset three time defending 5A Texas State Champion Midland Lee. Friday, Longview pulled off an bigger upset, one of the biggest in recent history.

Longview held the upper hand against the Eagles - ranked as high as No. 2 nationally by Rivals.com - scoring on its opening possession, and then regaining the lead every time Evangel rallied.

"You have to give credit to all of our kids and our coaching staff," said Collins. "We were battling a series of injuries over there on the sideline, and our coaches just kept coming up with kids to put out there.

"Offensively, we were phenomenal. We controlled what we wanted to do. They put onto it in the second half, but I thought Joel (Armstrong) was masterful."

Armstrong ran for two touchdowns, and passed for two others and he compiled 193 all-purpose yards. For the second straight week, Longview went over 300 yards total offense with 380.

Tied at 21-all at halftime, the Eagles took what be their only lead of the contest in the third. And, despite the 317 yards passing by Evangel quarterback, John David Booty, the Lobos mounted another fourth-quarter comeback.

A defensive stand, where Longview stopped Evangel on fourth-and-inches from the Eagle 35, saw the Lobos open the final stanza with a six play drive culminating in a 33-yard screen pass from Armstrong to Chris Jones. An all-out blitz by Evangel allowed Jones to race untouched down the left side of the field. The call came on third-and-27 as Longview had been hit by a paid of penalties and a sack of Armstrong.

The Lobos then held Evangel in check on back-to -back defensive series, stopping one drive on an interception by LaRandall McKing. A short punt by the Eagles set up Longview's winning drive at the Evangel 30.

Fred Hawkins, who rushed for 109 yards on 14 carries, carried three times for 22 yards, and Armstrong found Malcolm Kelly on the left sideline for a 33-yard gain to the Eagle 21 as the Lobos began to work on the clock. Sticking to the ground, they drove to the one where Evangel was forced to us all three of its timeouts. On fourth-and-goal with 46 seconds left, Cammack booted a 17-yard field goal.

With 44 seconds remaining, the Eagles and Booty managed to reach only their 30 before Maxey picked off the second Eagle pass of the night, returning it to the six-yard line and setting off a wild celebration on the Lobo sideline and in the stands.

"They're going to enjoy this for awhile, but on Monday we get back to work," Collins said. The Lobos host Lake Highlands next Friday at 7:30 PM.

Longview had quickly stunned on the Eagles on its opening drive, covering 70 yards to paydirt as Armstrong rumbled the final 28 yards as the Lobos jumped out in front 7-0.

Armstrong, who picked up 45 yards on three plays during the eight-play drive, stepped through a tackle at about the 15, nearly stumbling but maintaining his balance into the end zone. Cammack tackled on the point after.

The Lobos nearly had a gift on the subsequent kickoff as Evangel fumbled the ball and McKind recovered at the Eagle 38. However, the Eagle defensive stiffened and forced Longview to punt.

Evangel got on the scoreboard two series later as Booty connected with Detrick James for the first of their two first-half touchdowns. The 43-yard, 4-play series followed a defensive series with the Eagles who pinned the Lobos deep in their own end of the field.

Booty hit James for 28 yards to close the deficit to one, 7-6. The snap on the extra point was high and McKind blocked the kick by Jennings.

Longview quickly answered as Armstrong directed a 71-yard, 3-play drive, scoring on a 18-yard keeper. Hawkins set up the short-play series with a 50-yard burst up the middle. Cammack's PAT pushed the advantage to 14-6.

Evangel came right back as Booty and James covered 74 yards in one play, scoring with 2:22 showing in the first quarter. Booty then completed the two-point conversion to Tristen Rose.

The fireworks merely continued into the second quarter as Longview scored on the opening possession as Armstrong threw to a wide open Kelly with a 48-yard strike at the 11:53 mark.

Evangel knotted the game right before halftime on a run play as Jacob Hester covered eight yards with 1:43 to play. Hester would put the Eagles on top in the third yard with a 3-yard run.
