| RICHARDSON - An inopportune fumble in overtime by Longview allowed Lake Highlands to secure a 28-21 victory over the Lobos Friday night at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.
After playing catchup most of the night, the Wildcats tied the game late in the fourth quarter and scored on their first possession of overtime. A 1-yard dive up the middle by John Irvin wwas the game-winner after Lake Highlands won the coin flip and elected to go on offense first. Longview had reached the 11-yard line with its first possession on a 14-yard pass from Joe Creal to Courtney Taylor. However, a bad snap on the preceding play allowed Wildcat defenders Brian Malouf and Peter Cavazos to knock the ball loose from Creal, which Malouf recovered to end the ball game. The loss drops Longview to 1-1, while Lake Highlands improves to 2-0. The Lobos travel to Texas Stadium next Friday to face Duncanville. Sophomore Artillious Allison had given Longview a 21-14 lead with 7:25 remaining in the ballgame. It was his third touchdown of the game as he started in place of the injured Calvin Coleman. He finished with 91 yards on 18 carries. But the Wildcats rallied, twice converting on fourth down and recovering their own potentially game-killing fumble. A 59-yard pass from third string quarterback Taylor Keep to John Herrington on fourth-and-14 set up Keep's 12-yard keeper for the score. Lake Highlands also had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but Adam Oliver's 37-yard field goal was barley wide right with 11 seconds left to play. The second half was played in a steady rain. A pair of Allison touchdowns in the first half were the difference as Longview led 14-7. He scored on a 4-yard carry on the Lobos' first possession of the game, then ran in from the 5, which was setup by a 58-yard Creal to Taylor catch-and-run pass that snapped a 7-7 tie late in the second quarter. Allison had 68 yards in the first half on 10 carries, while Creal was 5-of-10 for 81. Taylor caught four passes for 71 yards. Longview's go-ahead score was the result of a Lake Highlands' fumble recovered by Keith Conner on the Lobo 27-yard line. It was the second fumble by the Wildcats, who had just switched quarterbacks. Chip Hodges - the backup - started in place of starter Tyler Sorenson, who injured his shoulder in Lake Highlands' win the previous week over Mesquite. Keep had just come in for Hodges, who had fumbled on the previous series. Longview marched 58 yards in eight plays on its first possession. A 17-yard pass from Creal to Taylor gave the Lobos a first-and-10 at the 19. Allison carried on the next three plays before scoring. |
