LOBOS STAGE RALLY, WHIP EAGLES, 16-10
DESOTO - Fred Talley scored twice and quarterback Trey Pierce threw for 129 yards in his varsity debut as the No. 6 ranked Longview Lobos rallied to capture a 16-10 win over DeSoto Friday night in the 1998 schoolboy season opener for both schools at Eagle Stadium.

Talley's one-yard dive up the middle with 8:31 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner as Longview rallied from a 10-7 halftime deficit. A sack of DeSoto quarterback Casey Printers by defensive end Frank Cox resulted in a safety with under two minutes left in the contest.

But the Eagles recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove to the Lobos' 14-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Pierce then took a knee as the clock expired with the ball in Longview's possession.

Talley finished with 120 yards rushing on 27 carries, while Pierce - Talley's cousin - completed 6 of 11 passes. However, the Lobos' efforts were nearly stymied by 85 yards in penalties.

Printers spearheaded the Eagles' offense by completing 11 of 13 passes for 125 yards. The senior, who threw for over 2,000 yards in 1997, suffered a cramp while being sacked on the safety. He was replaced by backup Jelani Ingram, who picked up 20 yards on his first carry and then connected for 14 yards for a first down at the Lobo 20.

But a tackle by Lobo linebacker Alan Rogers for a 5-yard loss threw the Eagles into long yardage.

Printers, who had returned, threw back to back incomplete passes to give the ball back to Longview and preserve the victory.

DeSoto capitalized on Longview's third fumble of the first half to take a 10-7 lead into the dressing room at halftime.

The Lobos had managed to escape unscathed on the two earlier miscues, and appeared on the verge of stopping another Eagle opportunity.

Turning the ball at their own 49-yard line, Longview defensive tackle Mark Peters forced Printers out of bounds for an 11-yard sack on the first play. Cox then stopped Eagle running back Michael Miles-Price in the backfield for a two-yard loss. But Printers, faced with a third and 23 from his won 38, uncorked a 41-yard completion to B.J. Butler down the left sideline. But Longview's Liberty Haynes came up big for the Lobos for a tackle on Miles-Price for another two-yard loss.

Printers then responded with a 19-yard throw to Tatum Bell, setting up a first and goal at the Lobo 4-yard line.

Two plays later, Sean Stephens rumbled across the one as the Eagles retook the lead. A 41-yard field goal by Cristyan Crespo on DeSoto's first possession gave it a 3-0 lead with 7:56 showing.

Crespo had also missed from 23 yards after Longview fumbled on its opening series of the game. An Eagle fumble - their only turnover of the firs half - enabled the Lobos to get on the scoreboard. Bo White fell on the loose ball at the DeSoto 17-yard line, with Talley then doing he work on all four carries before diving over from a yard out. Erik Hargrave booted the extra point as Longview led 7-3 with 1:42 left in the opening quarter.

The Lobos had a golden opportunity to put another touchdown on the board, driving from their own 23 to the Eagle 5-yard line. But on third-and-goal, the ball got away from Talley at the one and rolled out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.

Calvin Coleman picked up a couple of first downs on the drive, covering 17 and 11 yards. But a Pierce pass to Talley for 42 yards gave the Lobos a first down at the Eagle 9.
