LONGVIEW GIVES KANGAROOS A KICK, 12-7
KILLEEN - Longview took the opening possession of the second half the distance and the defense made it stand up as the No. 4-ranked Lobos rallied to beat Killeen Friday night at Leo Buckley Stadium, 12-7.

The Lobos rallied from a 7-3 deficit to march 70 yards in 11 plays as Jay Hurst connected with Shawn Byrdsong for seven yards to put Longview into the lead for the first time in the ball game. The touchdown drive consumed six minutes and eight seconds as Longview led 10-7 with 5:41 showing in the third quarter.

Longview's defense then took over by not allowing Killeen a first down and only one yard of total offense in the entire second half. The Lobos also shut down running back Curtis Dominguez, who had gained 91 of his 94 yards in the opening half of play.

"I just think the guys picked it up in the second half (defensively)," said Lobo head coach Robert Bero. "I don't know if they thought this was going to be easy if we just came down and showed up. Defense is an emotional game, and we weren't playing with an awful lot of emotion.

"We didn't tackle well. When you don't tackle, you're going to look bad, and we did in the first half. I thought the second half was an indication of how we can play defense when we come ready to play."

Killeen had only four possessions in the second half, where it went three and out in each. Longview's Tracy Brooks, William Morrison, Leon Bell, Marcus Jordan, Dexter Daniels and Doug Davis each recorded tackles for negative yardage against the Kangaroos.

The Lobos ran 34 offensive plays in the second half compared to just 16 for Killeen. Longview also picked up its running game as Fred Talley went over 100 yards for the first time this season. After gaining just 43 in the first half, he finished with 139 yards on 23 carries.

Hurst finished 9-of-15 for 76 yards passing and he threw one interception. Lee Nix had started the game and alternated at quarterback through much of it. Daniels, who played on both offense and defense, caught three passes for 51 yards. Talley also added 28 yards on four receptions.

"We just came out in the third quarter like we should have in the first," said Daniels. "We came in (at halftime) and talked about it. We decide we'd come out and give it our all."

The Lobos also picked up a safety as Killeen deep snapper Julius Wilson sailed the snap over the head of punter Neal Martinez with 6:45 remaining in the game.

David Monsavais first put the Lobos on the scoreboard with a 35-yard field goal to close out the opening half.

The Lobos finally moved the ball by the way of pass as Hurst came off the bench to direct a 15-play, 73-yard drive. He was 6-of-9 for 54 yards, which included a pair of fourth down conversions - 12 yards to Daniels and 13 to Kevin Bishop.

Longview was also aided by a pass interference call against the Kangaroos, which gave the Lobos a first down at the Killeen 15-yard line. However, Hurst was thrown for a two-yard loss on Dallas Robertson's sack, which was sandwiched between a pair of incomplete passes into the end zone.

Monsavais was finally called upon with five seconds remaining on the clock and the senior converted into a stiff breeze.
