| BEDFORD - Rocky Danners' 19-yard field goal with no time left on the clock left the Longview Lobos' state championship dreams lying on the turf of Pennington Field Saturday night as Killeen Ellison pulled out a heart-stopping 17-16 victory.
The win by Ellison (11-2) snaps a previous four-game playoff losing streak to the Lobos. It advances the Eagles to a Class 5A Division I semifinal Saturday against Lewsiville, a 38-14 winniner over Lubbock Coronado. Just three and a half minutes earlier it had been a 32-yard field goal by Longview's David Monsavais that had rallied the Lobos (9-4) from a 14-13 deficit. Monsavias' field goal was kicked into a stiff 25 mph northwest wind. "We came to win and are disappointed we didn't," said Longview head coach Robert Bero. "Our football team had a great effort. "You have to give Ellison credit for the last drive. They did what they had to do." The Eagles' winning drive began at their own 25-yard line and covered 74 yards in 11 plays. Senior tailback David Winbush romped for 45 yards on the fourth play of the drive, carrying the ball from his own 38 to the Longview 17-yard line. However, Ellison nearly ran out of plays after quarterback Robert Lewis was tackled at the one-yard line by Lobo secondary back Tavarus Glaspie. Lewis managed to get back to the line of scrimmage and spike the ball with four seconds remaining in the game. Two Eagle fumbles helped Longview rally from a 14-7 halftime deficit. "We took advantage of a few turnovers and missed some," Bero said. "At this level, you play good teams and they rose to the occasion. "We got into the power offense after the second touchdown and stayed with it. The entire offense executed well. They did a good job on the three (scoring) drives." Winbush, who led all rushers with 184 yards on 21 carries, fumbled twice. His last miscue with 3:29 left in the third quarter was converted by the Lobos into a six-play 27-yard drive. Quarterback Jay Hurst went the final four yards, scoring with 18 seconds left in the frame. However, Eric Roerecke's extra point was wide to the left, leaving Ellison ahead 14-13. But Nathan Jones committed the Eagles' third turnover as Bryan Templeton came away with the football at Longview's 31-yard line. The Lobos then consumed 69 yards in 12 plays. Hurst called his own number six times in the drive before Monsavais' kick. |
