LOBOS SOAR ABOVE SKYLINE, 48-17
BEDFORD - Longview awoke from its two-week offensive funk with a vengeance Saturday afternoon, punishing Dallas Skyline on the ground and through the air en route to a 48-17 romp in a Class 5A Division I bi-district playoff game at Pennington Field.

Longview advances to the regional semifinals, set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Texas Stadium in Irving, against the Plano-Allen winner.

Tailback Fred Talley racked up his sixth 100-yard rushing effort of the season with 145 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns. The Sophomore, who had surpassed the 1,000-yard mark by the eight game, had been held in check during the last two ballgames where the Lobos had been outscored 68-14.

The Lobos also found success through the air with three touchdown connections. They came late in the game having thrown for only one score all season. Jay Hurst finished 4 of 7 for 98 yards, while backup quarterback Lee Nix connected on both is attempts for 91, which also included one off a fake field goal attempt.

Eric Davis hauled in two passes for 81 yards, scoring the game's final touchdown on a 72-yard toss from Nix with 6:24 to play. Dexter Daniels made two receptions for 71 yards. Steven Bradley was on the end of both a Nix and Hurst scoring toss.

In the process, the Lobo defense controlled Skyline's Hodges Mitchell, who came into the game as the fourth leading rusher in Class 5A. He finished with a game high 189 yards on 29 carries, but it was all hard earned. The bulk of it came on two drives - the Raiders first and next to last series - with the biggest run of 34 yards coming as Skyline scored late the game.

But it was the first half, where the Lobos played their most inspiring on all five possessions. Tajuan Stoker, who finished with 82 yards on 12 carries, scored twice on runs of eight and one yard, while Talley tallied from a yard out and Bradley and Nix hooked up for 19 yards off a fake field goal attempt.

Longview took its opening possession and marched 47 yards in eight plays. However, the drive appeared stalled on fourth down at Skyline's 19-yard line. Daniel Monsavais, who had kicked a 41-yard field goal earlier this season, came on to attempt a 37-yarder.

But Nix, the holder, took the snap and hit a wide open Bradley down the left sideline for the touchdown with 6:04 left in the first quarter. Monsavais booted the point-after.

Skyline immediately followed with a time consuming drive, running eight minutes and 31 seconds off the clock before Patrick Mitchell booted a 31-yard field goal for a 7-3 deficit with 9:25 remaining in the half.

The two teams would then trade touchdowns. However, the Lobos would twice drive 80 yards, going 11 plays on the first series and a quick four in the next.

A 31-yard pass from Hurst to Daniels set up a Lobo scoring march, taking only 55 seconds, driving from their own 20-yard line to the Skyline 49. Stoker then broke into the Raider secondary and picked up 45 yards to the four-yard line. Talley finished off the drive with a one-yard dive.

In between Longview's two scoring matches, Skyline needed only 15 seconds off the clock as Montrell Flowers returned a kickoff 80 yards. Randy Davis caught the ball at the 17 and quickly handed off to Flowers, who outraced the pursuit down the left sideline for the score with 4:53 showing. However, the two-point conversion attempt was stopped short of the end zone.

Longview then tacked on its final points of the half as Hurst and Daniels connected again for 40 yards, and Stoker swept wide to the right for a one-yard touchdown as just 48 seconds remained in the half.
