| WACO - After being held scoreless for more than 40 minutes, the Longview Lobos erupted for three touchdowns in a span of four minutes, 44 seconds to post a 23-7 win over Waco High Friday night at Paul Tyson Stadium.
Both teams were visible shaky in their first game of the 1996 schoolboy football season. The game also marked the fifth straight year the Lobos and Lions have met in non-district play, of which Longview has won all five games. Tajuan Stoker scored twice for the Lobos, who had fallen behind 7-0 with 10:46 showing on the clock in the fourth quarter. The senior tailback's first touchdown completed an eight-play, 77-yard drive where Longview kept the ball on the ground. Quarterback Jay Hurst then avoided two would-be Lion tacklers on the subsequent two-point conversion attempt as the Lobos took the lead of 8-7 with 7:23 remaining. On the ensuing kickoff, Waco mishandled the return and started the possession at its own five-yard line. Four plays later, Dexter Daniels hauled in the Lions' punt and returned it 41 yards to the 14-yard line. Lee Nix, who had come in at quarterback for Hurst, gave the Lobos a first down on an 8-yard pass to Eric Davis at the two-yard line. Stoker then ran in untouched for his second touchdown of the game. Stoker also ran in the two-point conversion. It was then the defense's turn newt for Longview as Adrian Lee picked up a fumble off Lion quarterback Robert Glynn and returned it 21 yards for a score with 2:39 left to play. A hard rush by Errick Boyd forced the turnover. Erin Roerecke finished off the scoring for the Lobos with the point-after. Waco had broken the scoreless tie on a 58-yard, 17-play drive that consumed 9:00 off the clock. The series started in the third quarter and ended in the fourth when Joseph Montgomery scored on a fourth-and-one at the Lobo one-yard line. Ernesto Fraga's extra point gave the Lions a 7-0 advantage. The Lobos, who were also debuting their new one-back spread offense, finished with 209 yards on the ground. Stoker finished with 59 yards on 14 carries, while Sophomore Fred Talley added 44 on six totes. Through the air, Hurst was 3-of-4 for 25 yards. Montgomery led all rushers with 70 yards on 15 carries. Waco was held to 132 yards on the ground and Glynn completed 5-of-13 passes for 43 yards. Both teams also combined for five turnovers. Waco had mounted the only serious scoring thread of the first half driving to Longview's 17-yard line. However, the Lions would come away with no points as Fraga's 34-yard field goal attempt was wide to the left at the 8:57 mark of the second quarter. Lee made two key plays for Longview to stave off the Lions from his defensive end slot. After Glynn connected with James Stewart for 16 yards a first down. Lee tripped up Lacy with a diving tackle for a one-yard loss, and then hurried Glynn's pass attempt on third-and-11. Longview makes its home debut next Friday as the Lobo entertain Killeen. Kickoff is schedule for 7:30 p.m. |
