| LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos pushed the accelerator a little further Friday night, smothering Jasper, 28-0, at Lobo Stadium for their first shutout of the season and their first 5-0 record since 1990.
With an all-senior offensive line opening yawning holes, tailback Isiah Stoker darted for 154 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries - his fourth 100-yard game this fall. Head coach Robert Bero gave future foes something else to think about, running virtually every play out of a full-house backfield that included sprinter Juan Ingram. Ingram picked up 82 yards on just six carries, including an 11-yard touchdown burst, even though he had one 34-yard gain erased by a holding penalty. He also returned a punt 17 yards and stopped Jasper's only scoring bid by intercepting a pass in his end zone. That's Ingram's district leading fifth pickoff of the season. "We've gone 10 quarters now without allowing a touchdown," head coach Robert Bero said. "We've improved each week. Our offensive line is really coming on; that's one and a half games now that it's played up to its potential and all this is coming at the right time, as we go into district." Heretofore a slow-starting team, Longview scored seven points in each quarter and had this game well in hand by halftime. In the first two quarters, Jasper was out gained 202-35, and crossed midfield only once - on a penalty. The Bulldogs (3-2) had five possessions in that half. Four ended in a punt and the other at the halftime gun as they prepared for another punt. The Lobos scored on drives of 52, 64, 40 and 45 yards, combining consistently good field position with a punishing ground attack. Stoker scored on slashing runs of 5, 24 and 19 yards, and each time senior Jeff Works converted. Middle Linebacker Dante Roberts and tackle Ricky Norris stood out on the Longview defense. Jasper made its only drive in the third quarter with the score 21-0. The Bulldogs' tailback/defensive back, Darwin Scott, somehow threaded a halfback pass between two defenders to teammate Cedrick Hunt for a 32-yard gain to the Lobos' 3-yard line. However Scott gained only one yard at right tackle, and on second down a Longview pass rushed hit quarterback DeKendrick Vidito as he threw. Ingram fronted the received in the end zone and made the pickoff for a touchback. Three plays later, Ingram was the focal point of a razzle-dazzle play that gained 43 yards. Quarterback Lee Nix whirled away from center, stuck the ball on Ingram's belly, then joined Stoker and the fullback in carrying out fakes. After waiting for two counts, Ingram took off to his left and made it to the Jasper 37 before he caught. That drive fixed when a pass was tipped by Jasper linebacker and intercepted. But even with three turnovers and 60 yards in penalties, the Lobos had plenty of punch left over to go into next week's district opener, at Lufkin, with a clean slate. |
