LONGVIEW KNOCKS OFF WACO, 20-13
WACO - Lobo football.

Coming back out the second half and doing it the Longview way - grinding out the ball on the ground - the Lobos posted a 20-13 non-district triumph over Waco's Lion Friday night at Paul Tyson Stadium.

It was the Lobos' third straight win over the Lions in as many years and sixth overall in six games.

Held to just 52 yards rushing in the first half, Longview utilized the pile-driving runs and quickness of Chris Butcher and Isiah Stoker to control the ball and game with its long scoring drives.

Butcher capped a third-quarter, 11-play, 71-yard march with a seven-yard run to snap a 7-7 halftime tie, and Stoker ended a 10-play, 62-yard drive with a yard jaunt. It was Stoker's second touchdown of the game.

Together Butcher (24-111) and Stoker (9-69) combined for 180 yards. It was Butcher's first varsity start and Stoker's first varsity action.

Waco posted a 15-play, 17-yard drive which used 8:03 of the clock and scored with 7:24 left in the game when burly fullback Korley Ward bulled in from a yard out, but Juan Ingram crashed in from the right side to block the kick and leave the Lobos with a 14-13 advantage.

The Lions had just 82 yards and six first downs in the second half - most of it on the scoring march.

Defensively, middle linebacker Dante Roberts played an outstanding game as did safety preseason All-American choice Daydrion Taylor, who thwarted Waco's final drive with an interception at midfield.

The pickoff was Taylor's 13th in his career.

Although Longview staged a nifty second-quarter, goal-line stand, Waco cashed in only moments later by recovering a Longview fumble in the end zone and forged a 7-7 halftime tie.

The Lions had driven 79 yards in 17 plays and kept the ball 8:24, but Ward was stopped short on a fourth-and-one play at the Longview four-yard line. Waco had converted a fourth-down situation four plays earlier when quarterback Shane Newman kept up the middle for four yards.

Ward also had rans of 20 and 11 in the march, but he was stopped short when it counted.

The Lobos, however, twice were called for an illegal procedure and on a second-and-13 from the one, Miles and Butcher mishandled a handoff and Lions starting linebacker Melvin Mullins, who created the bad handoff, recovered the fumble with 3:50 left in the quarter.

Danny Cook added the extra point.

Longview scored on its second possession, following an Isiah Stoker fumble recovery at the Waco 41.

Eight plays later, Stoker carried it in from a yard out to score the first touchdown of the 1994 season with 1:24 remaining in the opening quarter. Stoker replaced Butcher and carried the final three plays.

Butcher had an 11-yard run and a nine-yard gainer early in the drive.
