LOBOS USE 4TH QUARTER TO DEFEAT NAC
LONGVIEW - Longview maintained its mastery over Nacogdoches Friday night - the Dragons have never won at Lobo Stadium.

The eight-ranked Lobos used a pair of fourth-down defensive stands up in the first half, then scored on a fourth-down play midway through the final period to break the game open en routes to a 27-10 triumph in a District 15-5A matchup. The win moved Longview to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in loop play in its quest to three-peat the championship.

The Dragons, playoff participants a year ago and winners over Longview twice in the last three years - both in Nacogdoches - are 2-5 and 0-2.

Although Longview held Nacogdoches to just three first downs and 42 total yards in the first half, the score was knotted at seven when the teams broke for intermission.

The Dragons went on top 10-7, via a 26-yard Eddy Furniss field goal with 4:50 left in the third quarter, capping a four-play, 32-yard drive.

Longview was unable to convert a first down on its ensuing possession and had to punt away, but two plays later Eric Andrews recovered a corey Penneywell fumble and the Lobos were in business at the Dragons' 11-yard line. L.V. Fite bulled in on the right side three plays later to put the Lobos back in the lead for good, but Darren Danielson misfired on the point-after attempt and it was 13-10 with 1:11 remaining.

The Lobos broke the game open midway through the last quarter when quarterback Corey Hutchings, who had scored the first touchdown on the game's opening drive, lofted a screen pass to Chris Butcher. Butcher did the rest and dashed in for a touchdown from a yard out with 6:07 left.

The final score of the game was 56-yard run by backup fullback Monte Rollins who took a quick-hitter up the middle on a second and long play and went in with 1:31 left.

Nacogdoches' first score came with 9:19 left in the first half after Brian Hunt blocked a Danielson punt and Barry Skillman recovered at the Longview nine-yard line.

On the first play from there, Penneywell burst up the middle for the score. Furniss added the extra point.

Longview twice stopped the Dragons in the first half, once at its own 16 on a fourth-and-one and again at the 22 on a fourth-and-two, so the defense continued to do its part in helping nab the win.

The Lobos scored relatively easy on the first possession of the game, driving 57 yards on nine plays and lighting the scoreboard with 5:47 left, but the offense was not able to generate any more points until near the end of the third period.

Longview held a 284-170 edge in total yards and a 14-12 advantage in first downs.

The Lobos will play host to Tyler Lee next Friday for Homecoming, while Nacogdoches return home to entertain Marshall.
