'DOCHES HANDS LONGVIEW SETBACK, 24-7
NACOGDOCHES - Longview might out to try avoid being Nacogdoches' Homecoming opponent. It's produced two defeats in three years.

Friday night at Dragon Stadium, Nacogdoches dealt the defending district champion Lobos a 24-7 defeat. The game wasn't unlike two years ago - a 33-12 loss - where Longview again lacked consistency on offense, and three times turned the ball over on downs.

The loss drops the Lobos to 1-1 in the 15-5A race and 5-2 overall. Nacogdoches improves to 1-0-1 and 6-0-1, as the Dragons take a big step towerd their first playoff berth since 1982.

"The fumble at the end of the first half hurt us when Nacogdoches got a field goal out of it," said Lobo coach Robert Bero. "The game really swung around when they stopped us on the opening drive of the second half. When they punched it in from there, we lost what little momentum we had."

Amond Hutchings carried the Lobo offense literally on his back with 180 yards, his fourth consecutive game over 100 yards rushing. But Longview was held well below its 317-yard average, most of the 252 total coming late in the game.

Longview was also playing without backup tailback L'Vendric Fite, who was suspended from the team earlier in the week. Fite was the team scoring leader with six touchdowns this season.

Trailing 17-7 at halftime, the Lobos held Nacogdoches on the opening kickoff of the second half.

Taking over a the Dragon 45, Longview ran off three plays, including a 5-yard procedural penalty which moved the ball back to midfield. A solid hit on Chad Daniels by Markeith Blackshire, jarred both Daniels and the ball loose as Nacogdoches took possession on the turnover.

Daniels suffered a light concussion on the play and did not return. Daniels was taken to Memorial Hospital for observation.

It took the Dragons only six plays to travel the distance, with quarterback Karl Chatman going the final yard with 5:39 remaining in the third quarter.

Chatman paced the Dragon offense with 194 yards combined rushing and passing. Tailback Isaac Bell added 142 yards on 23 carries. As a team, Nacogdoches produced 420 yards of total offense.

"From the word go, despite the first two fumbles, I thought we totally dominated the football game," said Nacogdoches coach Bob French. "That's what looks and feels so good. The key to the game (stopping Longview's offense) was their run sweep. If we stopped their sweep we would win."

Hutchings continued his torrid season pace in the opening half with 103 yards on 19 carries, but the Lobos went into the dressing room down 17-7.

A 1-yard drive by quarterback Chris Judy with 1:19 to play in the first quarter, opened the scoring as Longview put together a 6-play, 62-yard drive. Hutchings had a key run of 33 yards, setting up a first down at the Dragon 17-yard line.

But, while Hutchings was moved the ball, the Lobo offense overall struggled. Longview also twice turned the ball over on downs inside Dragon territory.

On the other side of the field, Chatman, while completing only three of eight asses in the first half for 83 yards, used two of those completions to set up a pair of Dragon touchdowns.

A 37-yard completion to Chris Koonce moved Nacogdoches from its own 38 to the Lobo 25 with under seven minutes remaining before halftime. Bell finished off the six-play, 75-yard drive to break a 7-7 tie with 4:45 showing on the clock.

A 20-yarder to Koonce late in the first quarter also moved the Dragons into Longview territory. Chatman added a nifty 10-yard run for a first down, eluding five would-be tacklers for a first-and-goal from the seven.

Bell finished off the 55-yard, eight play drive on a five-yard run around the right end at the 10:24 mark of the second frame.

Nacogdoches extended its lead to 10 points following a Hutchings' fumble on a 29-yard field goal.
