LOBOS RAMBLE BY RUSTON, 23-12
RUSTON - Keeping Ruston's offense off the field was the goal of Longview's coaching staff.

Using a combination of Amond Hutchings and Alton McAlister, the Lobos stuck to the ground with a 292-yard effort for a 23-12 triumph over the Bearcats in an 1-20 Texas-Louisiana football contest Friday night at James Field.

Longview, playing its first out-of-state contest in 21 years, concludes it's non-district schedule with a 4-1 record. The Lobos return to Lobo Stadium next Friday night for the District 15-5A opener against Lufkin.

Ruston, ranked No. 3 in the state of Louisiana, suffers its first loss of the season as the Bearcats head into district play at 4-1.

Hutchings went over 100 years for the third time this season, including back-to-back gams, with 157 on 27 carries. McAlister added 112 on 14 carries, the first 100-yard effort of his career.

All three of the Lobos' touchdowns came on long drives, covering 90, 83, and 91 yards.

Hutchings scored on a 3-yard run with 6:20 left in the third quarter for a 20-6 lead. The drive covered 91 yards on 13 plays.

Darren Danielson closed out the scoring with his third field goal of the year, from 25 yards at the 6:18 mark of the fourth.

The Bearcats, who were shut out after scoring the game's first touchdown in the opening minute of the second quarter, tallied on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Bo Meers to Steven Hampton with 3:49 left to play. However, Meeks' two-point conversion pass to David Jones was batted away by LaMarcus White.

Meeks, a Sophomore, completed 16 of 24 passes for 207 yards, while junior split end Hampton caught five for 91.

The Bearcats also netted 119 yards on 15 carries from Danny Young.

Consecutive scoring drives before halftime produced a 14-6 lead for the Lobos as both teams used a ball-control tempo.

McAlister had a career first half for Longview with 104 yards on nine carries.

The senior's 33-yard run from Ruston's 46 to the 13-yard line set up L'Vedric Fite's fifth rushing touchdown of the season with 5:53 left in the second quarter.

The 90-yard, 11-play drive and Danielson's extra point rallied the Lobos from an early 6-0 deficit.

On Longview's next possession, Hutchings cambered for 40 yards as the Lobos drove 83 yards in eight plays. Judy scored his first touchdown of the year with a 1-yard drive behind center Aaron Ormsby with 22 seconds remaining.

Ruston's touchdown started at their own 36 after Longview stalled on its opening possession, turning the ball over on downs.

The Bearcats used the legs on Young to travel 64 yards on 13 plays. Young carries on six plays, slipping across from a yard out with 11:06 showing in the second quarter. However, Ron Ainsworth's point-after try was wide to the right.

The Bearcats came within a finger trip of perhaps tying the contest as the half expired. Meeks' pass to Jones went off his outstretched hands.

Passes of 25 and 35 yards to Young and Hampton, respectively, had moved Ruston quickly up the final in the closing minute.
