| LONGVIEW - L'Vendric Fite may be Longview's answer to Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson.
An All-East Texas performer on the ball diamond last spring for the Lobos, the junior tailback put his mark on the football field Friday night. Fite, who follows starter Amond Hutchings as the backup, rushed for 126 yards on 22 carries and tailed both touchdowns as Longview handed Plano a 14-6 defeat at Lobo Stadium. The win Improved the Lobos to 2-1 for the season, while the Wildcats dropped likewise to 2-1. It was Longview's first win over Plano since 1975, and only the second in six gamed played between the two traditional football powers. "I was thinking I'd just go out there and do the best I can do for the team," said Fite, who admitted Snaders, of the Atlanta Falcons , and Jackson, the former Los Angeles Raider, are his two favorite football players. "But I couldn't have done it without that offensive line blocking, making the holes, and going after them." Fite provided the cushion of victory on a 4-yard touchdown run with 1:53 remaining. The six play, 29-yard drive was set up by Daydrion Taylor's interception of a Marcus Young pass. Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Plano had closed the gap to a single point as Tony Rogers kicked his second field goal of the contest, from 29 yards, at the 7:33 mark. Both teams struggled with turnovers, the Lobos with a pair of fumbles and Plano throwing three interceptions. But the Lobo defense was up to the task, holding the Wildcats, who came into the game averaging 364.9 yards per game, to 179 total. Adam McNeely was Plano's workhorse with 108 yards on 18 carries. But the Wildcats, who scored 50 points in both of their previous games, could not find the end zone Friday night. "We told our football team early in the week that if we wanted to beat a good football team, we had to learn how to play together," said Lobo head coach Robert Bero. Longview went to its bench late in the second quarter as Andrews and Fite came in to produce a five play, 65-yard drive to take a 7-3 yard lead into the dressing room. Fite, who came into the game to start the second quarter, used some wise running, twice reversing his field, to score from 7-yards out with 1:01 remaining in the half. Fite's touchdown was set up by Andrew's 30-yard over-the-shoulder catch from Chris Judy. The Lobos had moved into Plano territory on a Chad Daniels' reception for 29-yards down the right sideline. Longview's scoring drive took only 56 seconds. The Wildcats opened the scoring on a 29-yard field goal by Rogers with six seconds left in the first quarter. It concluded Plano's longest possession of the game, and came after Longview had turnover the ball over on down sat the 26-yard line. Longview twice turned the ball over on downs. |
