| LONGVIEW - Barring a possible meeting in the playoffs, the Longview Lobos hope they've seen the last of Dion Marion. That is...if Longview reaches postseason play.
Marion and the defending Class 5A Division I (largest enrollment) state champion Killeen Kangaroos (2-0) quieted the Lobos' early season euphoria with a 30-15 win in Longview's home opener at Lobo Stadium Friday night. The 6'1 Marion was making his senior season debut after sitting out the opener with a 141 yards on 19 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown run that set the tone in the first quarter. The Lobos, after opening on the road without any turnovers in a 20-10 win at Waco, found themselves playing catch up all night due to the numerous early mistakes. "They're an outstanding football team, and you can't make mistakes against an outstanding football team," said Lobo coach Robert Bero. "We made enough mistakes in the first half to last a season. A great football team takes advantage of mistakes and they did. "He's (Marion) an outstanding player. We're not the only football team that he's hurt." Marion's long run followed an interception with 6:08 left in the first quarter. Marion posted 111 yards in the opening half alone. He also tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass for Lavann Evans in the third quarter. A high snap over the head of Longview punter Levin Fuller led to a 22-yard field goal by Joe Courcy with 10:01 showing before halftime. The Kangroos tallied twice more in the quarter as quarterback Mark Humble, who completed 10 of 19 passes for 156 yards, found Gerald Patterson for both touchdowns. Patterson caught six passes for 82 yards. A partially blocked Fuller punt set up Killeen's final score of the half. The Lobos made a 24-0 halftime deficit respectable in the second quarter as quarterback Chris Judy paced a 13-of-18 air attack for 237 yards. Backup tailback L'vendric Fite scored the first Lobo touchdown with a 29-yard run down the left sideline at the 6:16 mark of the third quarter. Fite also pulled in a 42-yard pass from Judy with 4:19 remaining. Judy then tossed a 2-point conversion pass to Brent Goerner. Fite finished with 81 yards, all in the second half, to less the running game for Longview. Amond Hutchings, after a 151-yard effort against Waco, was held to 59 yards on 19 carries. Longview's deepest penetration of the first half was the Kangaroo 30, following a 57-yard pass form Judy to Chad Daniels. But the Lobos stalled, and on third-and-14, Judy's pass attempt to Daniels was tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Kenya Thomas. Longview also crossed into Kangaroo territory late in the first quarter, following a 15-yard personal foul, but an errant pitch from Judy to Hutchings was recovered by Carl Toney at the Lobos' 38. It resulted in one of Killeeen's non-scoring drives of the half as Courcy's 21-yard field goal attempt was wide to the left. The Kangaroos had also fumbled after a 32-yard Humble-to-Evans pass at Longview's 8 yard line as Daydrion Taylor picked up the loose ball. Longview plays host to Plano next Friday at 8 p.m. |
