LONGVIEW - Jason Dodson threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the second half as Longview moved into sole possession of first place in District 12-5A with a 13-7 win over Tyler Lee Friday night at Lobo Stadium.
The Lobos improve to 3-0 and take on John Tyler next Friday in Tyler with the district championship on the lone. A 28-10 loss by Marshall to Nacogdoches also clinches a playoff berth for Longview, which improves to 7-1 overall. John Tyler came into Friday night's district contests tied with Longview, but tied Lufkin 21-21. Dodson completed 5 of 9 passes, all to split end John Washington, 77 yards. Tailback Andre Davis pushed his season total to over 1,000 with 172 yards on 32 carries. He now has 1,066. Lee's Cassmer Walker also went over 100 yards with 120 on 20 carries. Quarterback Andy Newberry - the No. 2 passer in the district - completed 10 of 24 for 130 yards and Fred Coleman caught eight passes for 76. "We just did what we had to do to win the game - rise to the occasion," Dodson said. "The coaches had enough faith in me and the line. We came in to the (second) half with our minds right." After a scoreless first half, Longview broke the deadlock with 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter as Dodson connected with Washington for a 21-yard strike. Brian Payne's extra point put the Lobos on top 7-0. A 23-yard punt by the Red Raiders set up the 8-play, 54-yard drive at Lee's 46. Dodson found Washington on a crossing pattern in the the end zone. Dodson's touchdown completion made up for his fumble at the one-yard line on the previous series. The Lobos didn't have to wait long before getting the ball back on Bobby Taylor's fourth interception of the season at his own 41. A 19-yard run by Davis and an 11-yard completion from Dodson to Washington paced the 6-play drive, culminating in an option keeper by the senior quarterback. However, the snap on Payne's point-after try was high and Dodson, scrambling on the play, had his conversion attempt dropped in the back of the end zone by Michael Brooks. Longview led 13-0 with 8:52 showing in the fourth quarter. The Red Raiders responded with a 14-play, 78-yard drive with Walker going the final yard with 4:06 left on the clock. Ross Conner's kick made it a six-point game, 13-7. Despite a 44-yard run by Davis on Longview's next series, a pair of clipping calls for 30 yards in penalties gave Lee one more possession. However, the Red Raiders were left with no timeouts and the Lobo defense held. Longview crossed midfield only once in the first 24 minutes, reaching Lee's 17-yard line. But on third-and-two and fourth-and-two, the Lobos were stuffed at the line of scrimmage. On the Red Raiders' first play, Walker broke to the right sideline and raced 55 yards before Derrick Madden came from the other side of the field to make the tackler at the 17. But the Lee drive stalled and Conner's second field goal attempt of the night from 43 yards was wide to the right in the opening minute of the second quarter. Conner missed to the left earlier in the first frame from 28 yards out after Longview punter Levin Fuller had dropped the snap, which Troy Asbell recovered. |
