| LONGVIEW - Longview can now turn its attention to Lufkin and District 12-5A play which begins next Friday.
Led by Andre Davis' 120-yard rushing performance, a salty defensive effort and a steady showing by reserves, the Lobos concluded non-district play with a 30-0 shutout of Dallas South Oak Cliff Friday night in Lobo Stadium. The win improves Longview's season record to 4-1, while the Golden Bears out of District 10-4A, drop to 1-4. "I think we might have been looking ahead to next week," said Longview head coach Robert Bero, who admitted the Lobos were far from perfect in their execution against SOC. "That's hard not to do. You talk about playing every game, but when you've got an opponent like Lufkin waiting for you out there the next week, it's hard to not look at them.' "Our concentration was not where it needs to be, but we went out and did what we had to do to win a football game." Davis broke the 100-yard barrier for the first time this season with 23 carries and a pair of touchdowns. He now has scored 11 touchdowns to lead the team. Longview rumbled for 158 yards on the ground, while completing 10 of 19 passes for 140 using three different quarterbacks. Starter Jason Dodson was five of eight in the first half for 60 yards before being sidelined right before intermission after taking a solid hit to the chin. However, backup Brian Payne came in to start the second half and tossed a 13-yard touchdown strike to John Washington. The Lobo split end improved his season receptions to 17 with four catches for 54 yards. Third-string quarterback Chris Judy made the most of his appearance with a three of four showing for 58 yards in directing Longview's final score of the night. He hooked up twice with backup wingback Chad Daniels for 39 yards. Gary Johnson went the final four yards with 3:22 left in the contest. "I just kept working. We knew when Jason went down that Brian would have to go in there and if anything happened to Brian, I'd have to do the job and not be nervous," Judy said. "If one does go down, then we're just going to have to pick it up and just keep going with the same offense and not change it." Longview's defense limited the Bears to only 110 yards total offense and five first downs. The Bears only crossed the midfield three times, two of those drives coming on a pair of Longview fumbles. While escaping two possible crucial fumbles in the first half, the Lobo defense went into the dressing room after holding SOC to 52 yards, including a big four-down stand inside their own five-yard line. Taking over at the one, Longview when marched 99 yards in 14 plays to grab a 17-0 halftime advantage. Davis carried on six straight plays taking the ball to the 34. After a couple of penalties that threatened to stall the drive, Dodson went to the air to Washington and Todd Dauper, including a 17-yard completion for a first down at SOC's four-yard line with 1:11 showing on the clock. One play later, Davis went in for his second score of the opening half. Davis had opened the scoring with a four-yard burst up the middle at the 9:59 mark on Longview's opening possession. Payne also added a 31-yard field goal - his first of the season - with 3:09 left in the first quarter. The first miscue put SOC on the 25-yard line, but Corey Henderson fumbled on the second play and Archie Singleton recovered. However, Amond Hutchins gave the ball right back on his first carry of the night. Taking over at the 31, it took a 20-yard pass from quarterback Anthony Grady to Darnell Majors on a third-and-five to give SOC a first down at the five. But on fourth down at the two, Kendrick Tilley was stacked up. |
