LOBOS TURN TROJAN TURNOVERS INTO 20-6 WIN
CARROLLTON - One of Longview's offensive goals is to capitalize on its opponents' mistakes.

The Lobos definitely needed to Friday night as they benefited from a pair of second-half Newman Smith fumbles to escape with a 20-6 error prone victory at Standridge Stadium.

It was anything but pretty. It was a case of F-U-T-I-L-I-T-Y on both sidelines.

Longview improves its season record to 2-1, while the Trojans fall to 1-2.

Newman Smith coughed up the first fumble midway through the third quarter as Brian Payne recovered at the 41. Using a steady diet of Andre Davis, the Lobos covered the distance in seven plays as the senior tailback ran the final 14 yards for the score.

One series later, Trojan quarterback Mark Mitchell lost the handle and Archie Singleton fell on the ball at the Newman Smith 38. Davis again picked up the yardage, scoring three plays later from 19 yards out with 11:55 to play.

Davis finished with 96 yards on 24 carries, but 65 of those came in the second half after a tough opening 24 minutes. Longview actually garnered more penalty yardage than rushing in the first half, 52-38.

Longview was flagged for 120 yards in penalties for the game.

The Lobos finished with 158 yards on the ground. But again it was a strong passing game that rescued Longview was quarterback Jason Dodson completed five of eight attempts for 133 yards.

Longview's defense allowed Newman Smith's option game plan only 17 yards in the second half, including a minus 13 rushing with Fred Johnson collecting a pair.

"I don't think we had to tell them very much (at halftime)," said Lobo head coach Robert Bero. "We played a little apprehensive I thought early in the game. We weren't the aggressors.

"But we're a better football than that. I think they just made their minds up at halftime to come out and play football the way we know how to."

Longview and Newman Smith waltzed through the first half like two partners out of step. End result: 6-all tied.

Four times the Trojans drove into Longview's end of the field, but came away with only a pair of Dustin Ferrell field goals.

The Lobos only sustained drive of the first half was actually headed in the wrong direction before Dodson and Bobby Taylor connected for a 47-yard gain, setting up Davis' 1-yard plunge for the score.

A 22-yard personal foul and a subsequent delay of game call forced the Lobos into a third-and-33 at their own 44 after an apparent first down on a Dodson-to-John Washington pass at the Trojan 18.

Longview then took advantage of Newman Smith's single coverage in the secondary and isolated Taylor down the right sideline for his first catch of the season at the 9-yard line.

Other than that, it didn't get any better.

Ferrell kicked field goals of 28 and 32 yards, both coming in the second quarter at the 9:17 and 11 second mark respectively.

He almost missed a 37-yard attempt with 4:36 left in the opening quarter.

Longview did not make a first down until there 8:50 showing in the second quarter.

The Lobos return home next Friday to host Dallas Roosevelt at 7:30 p.m.
