| LONGVIEW - Killeen's speedy trio of Bill Spiller, Dion Marion and Charles West left Longview breathless in Friday night's 1991 schoolboy season-opener as the Kangaroos upset the seventh-ranked Lobos with a 27-7 victory at Lobo Stadium.
Killeen avenged last year's 21-9 defeat and sent Longview to its third opening game defeat in the last five years. The game was billed as a test of two young inexperienced defenses. But it was Longview's unit that spent much of the evening trying to corral the swifter Kangaroos, while the Lobo offense sputtered and self-destructed. Quarterback Spiller operated the run-and-shoot with precision, completing 11 of 15 passes for 228 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Wide receiver West pulled in six receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown, along with seeing action at tailback for 39 yards on six carries. Starting tailback Marion totaled 160 all-purpose yards, 62 yards rushing on 12 attempts and hauling in three catches for 98 more. All three were members of Killeen's 1991 state championship 400-meter relay team. The Kangaroos out gained Longview 330-239 in totals yards. Andre David paced the Lobos' 155-yard effort on the ground with 13 carries for 64 yards. However, the returning 1,000 yard tailback never really got on track. Quarterback Jason Dodson was 6-of-18 for 84 yards and a touchdown, a 19-yarder to split end John Washington. He also threw an interception, which Killeen turned into its first touchdown of the contest. The Lobos also fumbled twice. A pair of failed fourth down conversions resulted in two more scores of the Kangaroos. A missed fourth down opportunity with 2:24 to play in the third quarter led to the half's only points as Marion raced 13 yards for his third touchdown of the night. However, Spiller's extra point attempt was wide to the left. Longview's only touchdown came with 1:10 left in the first half as Dodson connected with Washington for a 21-yard over-the-shoulder touchdown reception in the end zone. A pooch kick by Killeen after the angaroos had taken 21-0 lead put the Lobos on their own 13-yard line. Successive passes of 13 yards to Washington and Davis quickly moved Longview into Killeen's end of the field. A 17-yard draw up the middle by Davis put the Lobos on the 24. Two plays later, Dodson and Washington put Longview on the scoreboard. Killeen's trio of spilled, Marion and West staked the Kangaroos to the three first-half touchdowns. Spiller connected on nine of 10 attempts for 203 yards passing with touchdown strikes to Marion for 60 yards and West 32. Marion opened the scoring for Killeen with a 6-yard burst to the middle at 9:05 mark of the first quarter. Melvin Gibbons had given the Kangaroos possession as the defensive back out leaped Longview's Todd Dauper for the interception at the Lobo 45. Marion's 34-yard run on the first play from scrimmage set Killeen up at Longview's six yard line. He rumbled across the goal line one play later. The Kangaroos went ahead 14-0 as Marion pulled in a 60-yard strike from Spiller with 2:30 showing on the clock. This coming on Killeen's fifth possession of the opening quarter. The Lobos continue their home-stand next Friday night against Fort Worth Trimble Tech. |
