LONGVIEW - A 21-point first quarter was all Longview needed as the No. 9 ranked Lobos rolled over Carrollton Newman Smith 49-21 Friday night at Lobo Stadium.
For the second week in a row, Longview had scored 35 points by halftime. The Lobos led Fort Worth Trimble Tech a week ago, 35-0. Longview improves to 3-0, while Newman Smith drops to 0-3. The Lobos only moved into the state's Class 5A Top 10 poll this past week. Jason Dodson and Kevin Madden each posted a pair of touchdowns to lead Longview's scoring assault in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Dodson threw a pair of touchdowns, connecting with Bobby Taylor and Derrick Head. Dodson, who was coming off a 100-yard performance against Trimble Tech, bettered that with a 4-of-6 showing for 112. A 22-yard pass from Dodson to Head, who moved over to the offense in the second half from his normal cornerback slot, closed out the game's scoring. Madden scored on both offense and defense. Starting at his cornerback position, he intercepted a pass in the first quarter for a touchdown, then rumbled for 34 yards later in the game after replacing Dodson at quarterback. The Lobos also neared the 300-yard rushing mark for the second week in a row with 287. Leading the way was tailback Andre Davis who scampered for 129 on only nine carries. It was the junior back's second 100-yard effort of the season. He posted 149 yards in the season-opening win over Killeen. Longview again routinely substituted in the backfield with seven different running backs carrying the football. Trailing 35-6, Newman Smith scored its second touchdown of the game when quarterback Billy Jones dove in from the one-yard line early in the third quarter. A try at a two point conversion pass play fell incomplete. Bobby Taylor, seeing his first offensive series of the season, hauled in a Dodson pass on the Lobos' second play of the game and raced 75 yards untouched in to the end zone. The junior quarterback found Taylor alone on the left sideline, in stride at the Trojan 45. After holding Newman Smith on defense, Longview needed only one play with Davis breaking through the middle of the Trojan line at his own 46 and rambling 54 yards for the touchdown. Two quick plays in only three offensive snaps had quickly put the Lobos on top, 14-0. However, Longview wasn't done as cornerback Madden picked off Jones' pass at the Newman Smith 27 and converted it into the Lobos' third touchdown of the game. With Dean Malone's point after the score ballooned to 21-0 with 7:31 still left in the opening quarter. Newman Smith's pointed would come off a high snap that sailed over the head of Longview punter Brian Bennett. It followed the Lobos' most sustained drive of the first half, which had reached the Trojans' 45 yard line. A clipping penalty, however, had backed the drive up. Attempting to run with the football after retrieving it, Bennett was tackled at his own 20 by Michael Torti. It took the Trojans four play before Jay Garrison drove across from a yard out. However kicker Jason Rollin's extra point was blocked by Mike Reedy, leaving the score 21-6. A bad snap by Newman Smith late in the quarter led to Longview's fourth touchdown at the Trojan 34. After a 26-yard run by Todd Dauper to the 8-yard line, Marques Ingram finished off the short series from the 5. Newman Smith immediately fumbled on the subsequent kickoff and the Lobos marched 19 yards in four plays with Randy Floyd going the last four yards for Longview's final points of the half. |
