| LONGVIEW - Earnest Hunter scored three first-half touchdowns to lead the Longivew Lobos to a 34-8 non-district victory over Fort Worth Trimble Tech here Friday night at Lobo Stadium.
Hunter, who finished with 107 yards on 20 carries, saw only brief action in the second half as Longview improved its season slate to 2-0 in its home debut. Trimble Tech, out of District 6-5A falls to 0-2. The win was the fifth Longview triumph in the six-year series between the two schools. The Lobos have now won the last four encounters. Hunter rushed for 85 yards in the opening half, scoring on runs of 5, 1 and 1 yards as Longview took a 20-0 halftime advantage. Trimble Tech's lone points came with 21 seconds left on the clock when Jimmie Roberson crossed into the end zone from five yards out Roberson then added a two-point conversion. Not only was the Lobo offense in control totaling 365 yards, so was the defense as the unit held the visitors to 158, including 114 on the ground. The Bulldogs biggest gain in the contest came in the waning minute on a 40-yard Anthony Robinson-to-Troy Dilworth pass completion that helped set up their touchdown. A pair of third-string players put the game on ice for Longview in the final quarter as Todd Dauper and Jason Dodson both came off the bench to score. Dauper replaced back-up tailback Marques Ingram and tallied from two yards out with 6:54 to play. A 6-yard pass from Dodson-to-Richard Murphy keyed the drive. One series later, Dodson, who was inserted at quarterback in the third quarter, dove across from a yard out with 3:37 showing. Dean Malone kicked the point after. Dodson's score series was set up when back-up signal-caller Selwyn Broughton, seeing action in the secondary, picked off a Robinson pass at the Trimble Tech 45 and returned it to the 12. Four plays later Dodson called his own number for the touchdown. Using a no huddle offense to open the contest, Longview quickly assumed control of the game. The Lobos moved from their own 37 yard line to the Tech's 35 before the Bulldogs called a timeout in an attempt to slow Longview's game plan. Hunter finally completed the 10-play, 63-yard drive with a 5-yard run as the Lobos took a 7-0 advantage. Starting at Tech's 30, he carried four straight plays before crossing into the end zone with 8:41 left on the clock. Kyle Cook added the point-after. Longview's defense paved the way for the second touchdown driving the Bulldogs from their own 40 back to the 22-yard line to force a fourth-down punt. A pair of fumbles which Tech eventually covered up nearly put the Lobos in even closer scoring range. A 22-yard pass from starting quarterback Kevin Madden to wingback Rodney Wallace set the Lobos up at the Bulldog seven. Three straight carries by the 200-pound Hunter led to a 1-yard plunge with 9:30 left in the second frame. The back-breaker for the Lobos came with under 30 seconds to play as Broughton engineered a quick 64-yard, 4-play drive with Hunter posting his third score of the night. |
