LONGVIEW USES BALANCED ATTACK TO TRIP ELLISON, 28-10
IRVING - Longview proved to Killeen Ellison that a third time wasn't going to be the charm as the Lobos held off the Eagles 28-10 here Friday night at Texas Stadium and advanced into the area round of the playoffs.

The Lobos will meet the winner of Saturday's bi-district game between Houston Kingwood and Cypress-Fairbanks tentatively set for next Saturday at Kyle Field on the texas A&M University campus in College Station.

Friday's game was the third time the two teams had met in bi-district with Longview winning on both previous occasions 14-7 in 1983 and 17-0 in '85. All three times the Lobos came in as District 13-5A champs, while Ellison was the 14-5A runner-up. Trailing 21-3 at the half, Ellison drove 75-yards in eight-plays to close the score to 21-10 with 9:06 left in the third quarter.

A 27-yard run by fullback Andre Banks moved the Eagles into Lobo territory at the 34. Quarterback Michael Hardge also added 21 yards on two carries in the drive to push the ball to Longview's 13.

After a 5-yard penalty on Ellison, an apparent interception by Eric Faggett on a Hardge pass turned into a 7-yard gain for the Eagles when Faggett fumbled and center Brian Rowe recovered.

One play later, Banks went up the middle for an 11-yard score. Brian Wiseman added the extra point and Ellison trailed by 11.

Penalties almost cost Longview on Ellison's next possession when Chris Fuller was tagged for a face mask call moving the Eagles out of a third-and-27 deep in their own end of the field. But the defense held and Ellison was forced to punt.

Longview put the game away when split end Terance Carter off a wingback reverse from Faggett and quarterback Mike Bobo found tight end Mike Tidwell near the goal line for a 28-yard scoring play with 11:20 to play in the game.

Allgood added his fourth extra point of the game and Longview led 28-10.

Ellison, however, did put together a lengthy drive on its next possession, but weak safety Fred Thompson broke up a pass attempt in the end zone on fourth down and Longview took over at its own 17.

Longview's defense did give up 192 yards through the air, 116 in the second half, but limited the Eagles to just 74 on the ground.

Defensively, Longview's pass rush accounted for a minus-28 yards for Hardge in sacks.

Passing sparked Longview to a 21-3 halftime lead as Bobo connected twice for 14 yards, while the defense held Ellison to 94 total yards and only one first down.

The Lobos hadn't passed for more than 100 yards in a game since Bobo threw for 141 against Fort Worth Trimble Tech in the second game of the season.

Coming into the game, Longview had thrown for only 595 yards this season.

Bobo's first strike resulted in a 62-yard scoring play to Carter, which was only his third catch of the season, at the 2:47 mark of the first quarter.

Carter caught the ball at Ellison's 16-yard line and eluded the grasp of Eagle defensive back Partnell Garrison and raced into the end zone. Allgood tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 Longview lead.

Throughout the opening quarter, the Lobos bottled up Ellison in its end of the field and did not allowed a first down.

The Eagles finally had a scoring opportunity when starting quarterback Dale Dvorak connected with split end Greg Lockhart for a 64-yard gain after the Lobos had pinned Ellison at it's own 15 following a 31-yard punt by Allgood.

However, the Lobo defense stiffened with defensive end Jesse Johnson stopping Andre Banks on a crucial second-and-third play at the Lobos' nine. Dvorak threw incomplete in the end zone on the preceding play.

Wiseman did put Ellison on the board at the 6:06 mark for he second quarter with a 26-yard field goal.

Longview then took the ball right back down the field on its proceeding series when Bobo again hooked up with Carter from his own 35 to the Ellison 13 for a 52-yard gain.

Three plays later fullback Ray Allison took a delayed handoff through the middle and then side-stepped Eagle linebacker Andre Eaddy at the two for an 11-yard touchdown, his 14th of the season. Alligood's PAT pushed Longview's advantage to 14-3 with 4:43 left before halftime.

Longview went up 21-3 just under a minute later when Kevin Middleton caught a Dvorak pass in the end zone.

Ezell Brown started Ellison's series when he received Allgood's ensuing kickoff near the far sideline at his own 6, but lost his balance and stepped out at the eight. After a 1-yard gain by banks and an incomplete pass by Dvorak, the junior quarterback was pressured into the end zone with a hard Longview rush. After avoiding two would-be sacks of a safety, Middleton intercepted Dvorak's ass attempt and the Lobos went up 20-3 at the 3:45 mark.

Allgood added the point after.

While the passing game produced most of Longview's yardage in the opening half, the Lobos did account for 109 yards on the ground.
