SECOND HALF DOMINANCE LEADS TO 34-12 LONGVIEW WIN
LONGVIEW - Boistered by a second-half onslaught Longview overcame Curtis Lang and the Pine Tree Pirates 34-12 Friday insight at Pirate Stadium to capture the District 13-5A championship.

the crown is the eighth under Longview coach Doug Cox, who last won the title in 1985.

The win also puts the Lobos in the bi-district round of the playoffs, tentatively set for Texas Stadium next Friday against Killeen Ellison.

Tyler Lee finishes up as the district's runner-up.

Longview needed a strong ground attack led by senior wingback Eric Faggett to turn back the upset-minded Pirate, who only trailed by one at halftime, 7-6.

Faggett, who garnered 121 yards on 14 carries, led a Lobos running game that blossomed for 234 yards in the second half.

The 100-yard effort by Faggett was his second of the year. He had earlier posted 104 against Nacogdoches.

Perhaps the turning point of the game occurred on Longview's second possession of the third quarter. After Pirate punter Clay Graham had pinned the Lobos deep in their own territory at the six, Faggett took a first-down reverse for 55 yards to the Pine Tree 39.

Three plays later quarterback Mike Bobo scored off a fake from 11 yards out. Steve Allgood's extra point was blocked, but Longview assumed a 13-6 lead with 5:29 to play in the quarter.

After the Lobos' defense held Pine Tree, Joe brooking then returned a 40-yard Graham punt to the Pirates' 36. A 15-yard keeper by Bobo advanced Longview to the 15 on a second-and-five play. A reverse by Faggett for seven yards and 6-yard run by Ray Allison moved the Lobos to the two.

However, a 5-yard penalty moved the ball back to the seven, but it only took two Allison rushes to put the Lobos in command, 20-6.

Again, Longview's defense held and the offense drove the ball 47 yards in 10 plays with Allison posting his 13th touchdown of the season on a 7-yard run. David Hill's extra point elevated the score to 27-6 with 7:38 left in the game.

Pine Tree did score with 7:!6 to play on Lang's 62-yard dash down the right sideline. Pine Tree attempted to go for the two-point conversion, but quarterback Brian Fisher mishandled the snap and was tackled from behind.

Longview added its final score on its last drive of the game, covering 30 yards in five plays after Brookins had recovered a Pirate fumble. Bobo then snuck it in from 1 yard out with 1:09 remaining.

"I was extremely proud for he way we played the second half. I didn't think we played too well defensively. We did a poor job of tackling and I guess that's a credit to No. 10 (Lang). Gosh, what an outstanding back he was," Cox noted.

Lang was a definite threat. He finished as the game's leading rusher with 152 yards on 14 carries and the one touchdown.

"Offensively, we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot. We'd get a fumble...we'd get a penalty," Cox continued.

The Lobos were guilty of losing two of three miscues and suffered 72 yards in penalties.

"Our first drive we did a great job, went the length and scored, but just didn't seem to get that consistency we needed after that. But I thought they came back in the second half and put it both together (offensively and defensively)," Cox added.

Defensively, Longview held the Pirates to 71 yards rushing and receiving in the second half. Pine Tree, which had eight first through first half could only muster four in the final two quarters.

Longview went on top first, scoring on its first possession of the game, driving 89 yards on 13 plays. Bobo capped it off with a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 45 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Allgood's extra point gave the Lobos a 7-0 lead.

However, the Lobos had trouble the remainder of the first half as the Pirate defense keep them bottled up in their own half of the field.

Pine Tree finally got a break when Lang cut inside on a trap play and carried it 54 yards for a first to the Longview 23 on a third-and-three play.

Four plays later, Graham, who had come in to replace Fisher at quarterback, rifled an 11-yard scoring toss to Trent Nalepa and the Pirates drew to within one. However, Nalepa's extra point attempted was blocked by Brookins.

One series earlier, the Pirates had a 48-yard field goal attempt blocked.

Longview posted its fourth 400 yard offensive output this season with 356 yards rushing and 46 passing. The Lobos eclipsed 400-yard game this season against Texas High, Nacogdoches and Marshall.

The Lobos garnered 25 first downs, 17 coming in the second half.

In addition to Faggett's 121 yards, Allison ripped off 88 yards on 13 attempts, and Calvin Jackson added 60 on nine carries. Jackson's game marked the third straight game Longview had used Jackson, normally a defensive performer, in the backfield.

Longview improves its record to 8-2, 6-1 in district, while Pine Tree concluded its season at 3-7, 1-6.
