| LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos don't like to lose. Friday night, they took out their frustration of an opening night loss by ripping Fort Worth trimble Tech 40-14 at Lobo Stadium.
However, it did take a 26-point second half for the Lobos to escape the pesky Bulldogs. Trailing 14-7 midway through the third quarter, Trimble Tech took advantage of a fumbled pass by the Lobos and drove 44 yards in one play a burst up the middle by quarterback Cornelius Carey. Kenneth Houston's extra point with 6:29 to play in the quarter tied the score at 14. Longview, however, used good play calling and a successful gadget play to pull ahead and coast to victory in the team's home opener. The Lobos took the lead for good on their first possession after the Bulldogs' score. They marched 67 yards in five plays with Ray Allison scampering the final five yards on a sweep to the right. It was Allison's second touchdown of the night. A 32-yard pass from quarterback Mike Bobo to Eric Faggett helped set up Allison's score. But, the extra point hit the crossbar and bounced back onto the field, leaving the Lobos up 20-14. The second possession, after Longview's defense held, resulted in 15-play, 82-yard drive. The big play resulted from a fake 52-yard field goal attempt. Facing a fourth and six at Trimble Tech's 30, the Lobos lined up for a 47-yard try to David Hill. But, Longview was called for delay of game. Standing five yards further back. Hill again lined up, but Bobo, the holder, found Faggett for a 15-yard pass play and a first down. Three plays later, Allison scored his third touchdown on a three yard run. Longview missed on the two-point conversion attempt, but had built its lead to 26-14 with 8:46 to play in the game. "It was questionable who was going to win this thing," said Lobo head coach Doug Cox. "I didn't feel real good at the half and I didn't feel real good, of course, when they came back and tied us up. But then we took the ball and boy did we start moving it consistently. I knew that, however many we had to score to win, we would score." It was the defense that then dug in and helped produce the final score of 40-14. Weak safety Anthony Jimmerson picked off a Carey pass and returned it 37 yards, setting up an 11-yard scoring run by Bobo. And reserve defensive end Colin Carr recovered a Bulldogs fumble at Trimble Tech's 25. Tony Blankenship then followed with an 18-yard scoring run. Steve Allgood connected on both PATs. Longview, as it did in the opening, scored on its first two possessions. Starting at their own 37, the Lobos took the ball 53 yards in five plays before Faggett scored on a reverse from 21 yards out. The extra point, however, was blocked as Longview staked a 6-0 lead. Trimble Tech did put together a 14-yard drive, but it turned it over on the Lobos' 24-yard line. Six plays later, Allison went in from six yards out with 11:11 to play before halftime. A 20-yard pass to Faggett and a 24-yard to Hunter helped keep Longview's drive alive. Hunter also scored on the two point conversion attempt. A roughing the kicker call against the Lobos late in the half helped Trimble Tech cut Longview's lead by seven. Having stalled its drive at Longview's 46, Houston was tackled by the ensuing rush attempting to block the punt. Queinton Waldon did the honors with 3:51 to play on a 10-yard run. Houston's extra point made the score 14-7. The win improved Longview's record to 1-1 on the season. Trimble Tech falls to 0-2. Bobo, who threw for 181 yards in a 24-19 loss to Kilgore last week, passed for over 100 yards again. He completed six of 10 for 134 yards. For the game, Longview outgained Trimble Tech 400 yards total offense to 206 for the Bulldogs. On the ground, the Lobos gained 194 yards in the second half after gaining only 72 in the first half. The Lobos host Dallas Carter next Friday at 7:30 p.m. |
