LOBOS WIN 16-0 FOR COX'S 100TH VICTORY
LONGVIEW - Pine Tree played cross-town rival Longview even for two quarters. Two quarters, however, do not a game make, because the second half was a whole 'nother story.

In a vintage Lobo performance, Longview broke from the second-half blocks, drove 86 yards - highlighted by an unexpected pass - and never looked back in a 16-0 triumph to close the regular season Friday night at Pine Tree Stadium.

The victory, Doug Cox's 100th at the 11-year helm of the Lobos, sends the District 13-AAAAA champion into bi-district action next week against Killeen Ellison next Saturday in Texas Stadium. It was Longview's seventh straight victory after a 1-2 start and the seventh loop title for a Cox-coached team. Longview has lost just one district game, last year against Texas High, since Pine Tree's 22-20 win at the tail end of the 1982 season.

Pine Tree ends its campaign at 5-5. It was the seventh Longview win in the eight-game series with the Bucs.

"The (100th) doesn't feel any different than the others," said Cox. "The kids played so hard. I was afraid they might be down," he said in reference to his charges claiming the No. 1 playoff spot a week ago in an emotionally-charged 7-3 win over John Tyler.

"They just came out in their power offense, which they run so well, and it limited how much time we got the ball," said Pirates' boss Maurice Cook. "They have a tough, aggressive defense. We gave a good effort, I thought our players played hard, but I have to give credit to Longview ... they're the district champ and they earned it."

Although the two battled to a scoreless deadline in the first half, the Lobos did not take long - 3:57 to be exact - to light the scoreboard after the second-half kick. Tailback Thomas Snoddy, who picked up 100 yards (104) for the third straight game, did it in grand Lobo fashion.

In the go-ahead drive, the junior carried seven times and picked up 51 yards, pulling the Pirate defense up to the line and opening the secondary for Kirt Griffin to connect with a wide open Brian Williams who raced into the end zone untouched from 29 yards with 8:03 left in the third quarter.

The 86-yard march took nine plays and Jason Baird's extra point made it 7-0.

Rodney Jones rattled the Longview defense for 95 yards in the first half - he finished with 113 - but a rigid performance by an aroused Lobo bunch in the second half held the Bucs at bay.

Jones answered Williams' touchdown with a 59-yard kickoff return in which he spun away from a Baird tackle before Carwyn Richardson came up with a touchdown saving stop at the Longview 38, but three plays later he fumble, the fourth of five Pine Tree turnovers, and the Lobos wasted little time.

Sparked by a 25-yard Griffin-to-Williams pass play to the Pirates' 41. Snoddy covered the remainder of the distance in one quick burst around the right end for a 13-0 lead with 4:59 left. The drive had been set up when Glenn Moore recovered Jones' bobble.

A 27-yard Baird field goal which capped a time-consuming 15-play, 58-yard drive, ended the scoring with 9:52 left in the game. Twice the Lobos converted third-down plays and once a fourth-down situation to keep the final scoring drive alive.

Jones' 113 yards enabled him to become the first back to rush for 100 yards against the vaunted Lobo defense this season and closed his varsity career with 3,630 yards. He had a career-best 1,306 this season.

The shutout was also the first time the Bucs had been held scoreless since midway through the 1982 season.

Twice in the opening half Pine Tree had possession inside the Lobos' 20 only to come away empty handed.

Randolph Lemons recovered a Snoddy fumble at the Longview 18 but a Bill Bratton reverse halfback pass was intercepted in the end zone by Moore on the ensuing play.

The Bucs drove from their own 20 to the Longview 18 before a holding penalty moved the ball back. The 11-play drive ended with a Tim Greaves' 42-yard field goal, which sailed wide left.

With Jones carrying most of the time, Pine Tree racked up a 131-37 advantage in total yards. Jones' 15 carries netted 95 yards, including two gains of 16 on third down plays in which he demonstrated tremendous second effort to keep the drive alive.

Penalties also hampered the Lobos. A 14-yard Griffin-to-Williams pass on the final play of the first quarter placed the ball at the Pine Tree 37.

But a 10-yard holding penalty, a five-yard illegal procedure call and a pair of defensive gems - an Alvin Hawkins break up and a Mark Keith sack - halted the drive, forcing a punt.

Pine Tree committed its third turnover of the half when Mike Adams pulled down a Steve Hardy pass to put the Lobos back in business. Alvin Hawkins blitzed and sacked Griffin a few plays later and Longview was forced to punt again.

The Pine Tree 37 was the Lobos' deep penetration in the first two quarters. Longview had just five first downs and 13 yards rushing, on 15 attempts, at the intermission.
