KLEIN RUNS OVER STUNNED LOBOS, 35-0
WACO - This time, there was no last minute heroics by the Longview Lobos.

Klein's Bearkats hogged the spotlight from start to finish.

Scoring early, late and in between, the Bearkats pulled off a shocking 35-0 shutout over the Lobos here Saturday night at Floyd Casey Stadium in Class AAAAA area playoff action.

Longview falls for the first time in its last 11 outings finishing the 1983 season with a 10-2 record. Klein improves to 11-1 and will face top-ranked Highland Park in regional play next week.

An awesome running game proved to be the difference as Klein's overloaded backfield totaled 389 yards, while the defense held the Lobo ground attack to 105.

Ross Klein had 140 yards on 21 carries to lead the Bearkats and teammates Kyle Atkinson and Larry LeBeau contributed 121 and 103, respectively.

Longview's Joe Johnson was held in check for the second straight week, picking up only 33 yards on 10 carries. Senior O'Neal Jackson had 32 on six trips.

Klein began its offensive barrage in the first quarter. The Bearkats, with a 25-mile per hour wind at their backs, won the battle of field position.

Taking the ball at the Lobo 49 at the 5:41 mark, it took seven running plays to break on the scoreboard. LeBeau capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run with 3:40 remaining in the first period.

Longview began marching on its series, as Johnson put together runs of 12, 7 and 8 yards to advance the ball to the Klein 33.

From there, Eric Harris rolled out to pass but crossed the line of scrimmage on a second down-and-four play. The penalty moved the Lobos back to the 38 and cost them a down.

A mishandled snap on the following play resulted in another five-yard loss and a fake punt and run by Mike Buffins on fourth down failed to pick up the first down.

Methodically, Klein put together a 13-play drive to move inside the Longview 10. A 14-yard keeper by quarterback Randy Kirk on a third-and-nine call highlighted the march.

Then, from the 8-yard line Kirk made good on his only pass of the night, rolling out and hitting split end Mike Patrick for Klein's second touchdown at 5:04 of the second quarter.

Klein got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff when a short, high kick fell at the Lobo 27 and the Bearkats managed to recover.

Three plays later, though, Longview linebacker John Northcutt recovered a Kirk fumble at the nine, temporarily thwarting Klein.

Temporarily.

After three plays and a punt, Klein had possession at its own 43. Fighting runs by Klein and Atkinson, and a pair of Lobo penalties, moved the ball to the Lobo 26.

From there Kirk swept right and pitched to Atkinson who was all alone He carried it in to advance the score to 21-0.

The Bearkats added two more touchdowns in the second half.

Kirk carried over from the 1 with 3:31 remaining in the third capping a 10-play, 63-yard drive.

Then, with 2:22 left in the game, Klein capped another Bearkat drive with a 9-yard scoring jaunt.

Defensively for the Lobos, Leon Hendrix picked off a Kirk pass and returned it 11 yards, while Derwin Moore and Northcutt both pounced on Klein fumbles.

Harris finished 6-of-13 for 61 passing yards. And senior Johnny Smith, who came in late, had one completion for 16. Wingback Charles Smith was the leading Lobo receiver, snagging three for 52.
