SMITH'S LATE HEROICS GIVE LONGVIEW WIN
WACO - Deadlocked at 7-7 with less than a minute to play, Killeen Ellison's Eagles were thinking penetrations. They were on the verge of upsetting Longview's Lobos on that statistics 3-1.

But, while the Ellison were humming "turn out the lights," the Lobos were setting up to light up the scoreboard.

Quarterback Eric Harris threw up an 80-yard bomb to a streaking Charles Smith, and the fleet-footed junior never broke stride.

Smith outran the Ellison coverage, sneaked into the corner of the end zone and gave Longview a 14-7 victory here at Baylor Stadium Saturday night before a crowd of 9,269.

With the dramatic bi-district victory, Longview advances to area action against Klein, to be played here next week. The Lobos' winning streak moves to 10-straight games.

Ater the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie through three quarters, Longview broke the deadlock at 7:14.

Harris, who on the night was three-of-eight passing for 99 yards, scampered in from 9-yards out.

A fumble recovery from Ronald Cleaver had set up the go-ahead touchdown.

Ellison had a chance for three points when King apparently kicked a 20-yard field goal, but off-setting penalties nullified the points and the play was done over.

This time Lobo defenders John Northcutt, and once again, Robertson fought their win in and blocked the kick.

After exchanging possessions, the Eagles came back to knot the score again.

Set up by a 27-yard scamper by Marcus Bibb, Ellison's Johnny Brown moved the ball in from 1-yard out, putting them back in the driver's seat.

Longview's Joe Johnson, the team's top ground threat going into the game, picked up just 15 yards on 11 carries. O'Neal Jackson and Clifford Powell were called upon to contribute, and Jackson added 69 on 12 totes and Powell 59 on 11.

Bibb led the Eagles with 55 yards and Brown had 48.

Ellison's rock-hard defense did everything it could to take the game away in an error-prone first half.

With the Lobos in possession at the Eagle 39 on third down and six, Harris went back to pass and was blindsided by Ellison defender Kevin Revis, giving up the football and 10 yards in the process.

But the Eagles failed to capitalize.

On Longview's next possession, another big third down play by Ellison's defense thwarted another drive. Linebacker David Bell picked off a Harris pass and advanced it to the Lobo 39 with 1:18 remaining in the first quarter.

Four plays later, Eric King was set up to try his luck on a 42-yard field goal. But a solid Longview defensive surge, led by a leaping Tarodney Robertson, managed to block the kick.

After a short Lobo drive a 43-yard punt by Wes McWhorter pinned the Eagles at their own 12. But a 24-yard pass to Bell and a pair of runs by Brown was able to move the ball near midfield before the Lobo defense held firm again.

The Eagles got the ball right back when Smith mishandled a high punt and the Eagles recovered the Lobo 31. From there, Ellison made the big mistake.

A charging Longview defense forced a bad pitch from quarterback Jerry Bark, and Brown ended up losing the ball to lineman Derwin Moore.

That was the last threat for either team in the half.

Johnson had just eight yards on eight carries at intermission, while Powell led the Lobos with 38 and Jackson 22.

Harris was one-of-four for only eight yards and his interception.
