BLASCHKE'S TOE WORKS AGAIN, 17-14
TEXARKANA - For the second time in as many seasons, Longview's Steve Blaschke has beaten Texas High with a field goal.

The 6'1, 165-pound senior booted a 27-yarder completely out of Grim Stadium, handing the Lobos their second District 13-AAAAA victory without a defeat, 17-14 over the Tigers here Friday night.

Blaschke, who is quickly gaining notoriety as Longview's Mr. Clutch, hit the game-winner with just 10 seconds showing on the game clock, consummating a 77-yard drive in just 10 plays.

He also won last year's contest with the Tigers on a late field goal in Lobo Stadium.

"I thought it was a great game," said Longview head coach Doug Cox. "I feel fortunate that we were able to win."

Quarterback Eric Harris, who passed for 59 yards in the game, completed the game's biggest pass to tight end Marlin Myers, good for 25 yards across the middle with the Lobos stalled at the Texas High 47 late in the game. O'Neal Jackson then picked up three more yards, setting up Blaschke in the middle of the field.

And all this happened after Texas High had caught the Longview secondary off guard.

Texas High quarterback Jeff Lawrence, whose figures were 5 of 10 for 72, connected with wingback Lance Raney down the sidelines early in the fourth quarter. Raney fabled untouched into the end zone to knot the contest at 14-14.

The Tigers also jumped out to an early lead in the contest, after pinning the Lobos deep in their own end of the field on a third down quick kick.

After a Wes McWhorter punt, the Tigers had the ball at the Lobo 27. And with hard-running Kevin Haley doing the damage, the Tigers put up six points at the 6:19 mark of the first quarter on a Haley 2-yard run.

Longview came back late in the quarter to mount a solid drive, but just after changing ends of the field in the second period, Joe Johnson lost the football at the Tiger 15, and Texas High gained possession.
