LOBO 20-POINT EXPLOSION NETS WIN OVER PANTHERS
LONGVIEW - The Longview Lobos stung the Lufkin Panthers with 20 second-quarter points, then played keep-away with the Panthers in the second half to record a 26-6 homecoming victory over Lufkin in District 13-AAAAA football action Friday night at Lobo Stadium.

Longview allowed Lufkin to drive for a touchdown on the Panthers' first offensive possession of the night but then turned the tables on the Lufkin squad in the second quarter as the Lobos reeled off 20 straight points to carry a 20-6 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Longview defense took over, limiting Lufkin to just 16 offensive plays and one first down while the Lobo offense added an insurance touchdown.

Tailback Fred Hunter led the Lobo rushing attack with 121 yards on 24 carries but three others in the Longview backfield - quarterback Henry Shaw and wing backs Donnie Centers and Kenneth Hendrix - gained 49 yards or more in the contest. Shaw and Centers each contributed 57 yards to the winning cause and Hendrix added 49 yards.

Shaw also riddled the Lufkin secondary, hitting on five of 10 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Centers was on the receiving end of a 47-yard touchdown toss and tight end Marlin Myers caught the other scoring pass from Shaw, a 12-yarder.

Lufkin speedster Darrel Cranford returned the opening kickoff 47 yards to the Lobo 37-yard line and the Panthers drove for their only score of the evening in just five plays. The final 9 yards was a pass from Lufkin quarterback Chris Canley to split end Cedric Doggett for the score, but the PAT kick was no good as it bounced off the left upright.

The Lobos waited until the second quarter to strike, but strike they did as Kenneth Hendrix capped an 80-yard drive on 19 plays with an 18-yard scamper into the end zone. And the Lobos never trailed again after Steve Blashke booted the extra point to put Longview up 7-6, early in the second frame.

Following a Michael Govan interception, Longview drove 60 yards to increase their lead with Shaw finding Myers across the middle for a 12-yard touchdown connection. Blashke's kick with 6:40 remaining in the first half capped the drive.

But the Lobos weren't finished with their scoring binge. With 1:38 left in the first half, Shaw spotted Centers streaking beyond the Lufkin secondary and fired a perfect spiral deep downfield. Centers gathered in the pass and, without breaking stride, waltzed into the end zone for the touchdown.

The final Longview score came midway through the third quarter as Hunter's 1-yard plunge capped an 84-yard drive in 12 plays.
