LONGVIEW TOO MUCH FOR MARSHALL, 18-7
MARSHALL - Longview mentor Doug Cox said in the pre-game hype that he'd rather play Marshall at home. But after his Lobos outmuscled the Mavericks, 18-7, you won't get any argument from him where they play.

Playing in front of a capacity crowd in Maverick Stadium marking Marshall's Homecoming, Longview played inspired football as the Lobos stayed one game back of Lufkin, a 13-0 winner over Texarkana. With the triumph, Longview moved into a second place tie with the Mavericks, with each having 3-1-1 district records.

Sporting white jerseys on green pants for the first time this year, the Lobos also extended their winning streak over Marshall to 12 games, dating back to 1967.

If Longview supporters thought last week's win over Texas High was so great, they were in for a real treat on this occasion. The Lobos were awesome, both offensively and defensively.

Clifford Ward led all rushers with 83 hard-earner yards on 29 carries, and two touchdowns. Quarterback Derek Grant was an excellent field general, completing four-of-six passes for 50 yards while responding several key runs for crucial first downs.

Defensively, linebackers Kelvin Bates and Willard Hunter sacked Marshall quarterback Roger Dunlap for a 10-yard loss. Eric Borders came up with a key fumble recovery in the end zone, thwarting a second quarter Marshall threat at the Longview one, and Kyle Jones' fourth interception of the year sealed the victory with 33 seconds remaining in the game.

Leading 7-0 at half-time, Marshall tied the game on its first possession of the third quarter, driving 71 yards on eight plays. Known for their explosive offense, the touchdown came on a 49-yard burst up the middle by junior running back Keith Hawkins, who took the handoff, veered to the right and scored untouched. Stanley Mercer knotted the contest with the extra point.

Longview as forced to punt on its only two possessions in the quarter, and moved in for the tie-breaker with 11:11 remaining. Exercising good ball control, the Lobos drove form their 31 to the Marshall 10 before calling on Chuck Tomberlain, who broke the tie with a 27-yard field goal.

The Green Machine had four first downs in the drive, moving the ball on the ground on 14 of the 15-play drive. The only pass attempt resulted in an interference call against Marshall's Bobby Smith, which turned a second-and-eight situation into a key first down.

A clipping penalty on the kickoff set the Mavs back to the eight, where they were forced to punt from the 10. Wayne Nichols' punt traveled only 32 yards, and the Lobos went to work from the Mavs' 42 with 3:14 left in the game.

Utilizing ball control, Longview drove in for the score behind the running of Ward, Gahlen Johnson and Grant Johnson's 13-yard run moved the ball to the Marshall five, where Ward scored on the next play with 49 seconds remaining.

Ward threw to Brown for th two-point conversion, raising the lead to 18-7.
