PASCHAL STUNS LOBOS
LONGVIEW - To end an unbelievable night, the Longview Lobos held their heads high and marched proudly around the field in defeat.

In what was expected to be a rout or even a slim victory at best, the contest turned out to be a shocker for Longview fans.

Behind the 11-for-14 passing of Daryl Zeller and a solid running attack, Fort Worth Paschal grinded out a 30-23 victory at Lobo Stadium Friday night. The local heroes had two chances to come back at the end, but each one resulted in a fumble and an interception.

Trailing 30-23 with 2:21 remaining, at the Longview 34, quarterback Derek Grant guided the team into the two-minute drill. Grant hit Bobby Daniels on successive plays to drive on the Paschal 28. Attempting to pass on the next play, Grant had the ball knocked out of his hands, and the Panthers' Sammy Basaldu recovered at the 32.

The Lobos used their timeouts to stall the Panthers, who punted to the Longview 44 with 53 seconds remaining. Rolling out to pass, Grant was dumped for a 12-yard loss by the fierce Panthers' defense. On the next play, Eugene Carodine knocked Grant's bomb into the waiting arms of Charles Specks and the game was virtually over.

Paschal could do very little wrong on this night, and took advantage of Longview's miscues. Zeller, who finished the night with 156 yards passing and two touchdowns, kept the Lobos off balance throughout the night. Running backs David Brooks and Keneth Trim finished with 77 and 63 yards rushing on a combined 33 attempts. The Lobos, as a team, had only 30 rushing attempts.

Zeller hit a 13-yard scoring strike to Brooks with 5:11 remaining in what turned out to be the winning score. Ted Norman passed to Kenneth McClellan for Paschal's second successful two-point conversion of the night.

Longview's Gahlen Johnson, who led all rushers with 91 yards on 10 carries, fumbled with 3:52 left at the Longview 43. It was one of three costly turnovers.

Behind 22-16 at the half, the Lobos drove 62 yards on their first possession of the second half. Johnson's burst up the middle netted 38 yards and tied the contest at 22-22. Chuck Tomberlain tacked on the extra point at 10:29 of the third quarter.

In contrast to a defensive second half, Paschal score on its first three possessions of the game. The Panthers had drives of 81 and 26 yards to take a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Zeller passed 20 yards to McClellan for the first score, and Brooks carried over from the two-yard line.
