| LONGVIEW - It was, to put it simply, a fan's delight. Unless of course, you have a bad heart or ulcers. And if you didn't, you probably do now.
Longview quarterback Victor McGee hit tight end Mike Faggett on a 72-yard flea flicker with just over two minutes left to give Longview a, 17-14, victory over Marshall here Friday night, but it wasn't over until the final seconds as the Mavericks refused to give up and drove down to the Lobo 30 before the Longview defense stiffened to protect the win. McGee connected on six of nine passes for a career-high 222 yards, but Marshall quarterback Todd Morgan matched him throw-for-throw with a 13 for 22 performance for 205 yards. It would be safe to say the ball-control Longview Power I offense is no more, at least not in 1978. Facing a second-and-25 situation at his own 28, McGee handed off to tailback Sammy Broughton who started around right end, pulled up and threw back to McGee who was standing at the 20. The Lobo quarterback slipped through the grasp of Marshall lineman David Lyons and unloaded a bomb to Faggett who was standing wide open at the Marshall 25. The tight end broke a tackle and outraced another defender to the right corner of the end zone for the go-ahead score. Longview's first touchdown came only two plays after Marshall had scored to take a brief 7-3 lead in the second quarter. After Marshall had driven 80 yards in 12 plays, with Morgan hitting Jimmy Williams with a 33-yard aerial for the touchdown. Longview ran the kickoff to the 36. Broughton carried around left end for six yards, and then Longview coach Doug Cox called the 'lonesome end' play. Ten players went back to the Longview huddle while wingback Ed Jackson stood just on the playing field in front of the Lobo bench. The ball was snapped and Jackson headed straight downfield. McGee lofted a soft pass which Jackson gathered in at the Marshall 40 and raced untouched to the end zone to propel Longview to a 10-7 halftime lead. Williams latched onto six of Morgan's throws for 136 yards and both touchdowns. Faggett had only two catches, but they amounted to 115 yards. It was a dramatic come-from-behind victory for the Lobos, who were shutout by Texarkana 21-0 last week. But neither team would give up. After Longview had scored to go ahead, 17-14, Marshall ran the ball back to its own 16. Morgan hit tight end Stanley Mercer for a 12-yard gain to the 28, but then Longview safety Derek Grant stepped in front of a Morgan aerial to take his second interception of the year. |
