| LONGVIEW - A tremendous defensive effort and a conservative offensive philosophy netted the Longview Lobos their second win of the season without the loss, a 28-6 decision over Fort Worth Paschal here Friday night.
The Lobos scored their first two drives and coach Doug Cox sent in his second team offense midway through the second period and watched them play the rest of the game. Fort Worth Paschal, who has lost five straight times to Longview, gained only 56 total yards, having a net gain of minus three yards in the second half. Paschal's only touchdown came with four seconds remaining in the contest. A Longview lineman touched a Paschal punt and the Panthers recovered the ball on the Longview 13 with 48 seconds left. Three plays later, Paschal quarterback Ted Norma hit Brian Patterson with a 14-yard scoring aerial. Ed Jackson returned the game's opening kickoff 37 yards to set the Lobos up at the Paschal 43. Eight plays later, fullback Larry Smith blasted across from the two-yard line for his first touchdown of the year. The big play in the drive was a 14-yard scamper by Jackson from his wingback position, although tailback Sam Lanier also had a 12-yard burst. Paschal could go nowhere after the ensuing kickoff and had to punt after three downs, with Longview taking over at its own 49 after defensive end Mack Faggett got a hand on the kick and it raveled only 23 yards. Split end Lowell Thomas took the Lobos to the 10 right quick with a 25-yard scamper on an end-around after the Lobos had squeaked out a first down. Three plays later, Lanier scored from a yard out. Longview's third touchdown was set up when Paschal fumbled a punt and Rex Owens fell on the loose pigskin at the Panther 33. Five plays later, Lanier scored from the one. The big play again was a 25-yard end-around by Thomas. Although the Lobos didn't score again in the first half, Longview's second offensive unit put on quite a show in the final three minutes behind the passing arm of Derek Grant and the receptions of wingback Freddie Lewis and right end Mack Faggett. Starting at their own five-yard line after a goal-line stand. Longview promptly drew a delay-of-game penalty that set them back to the two. Facing a third-and-eight at the seven two plays later, Grant found Faggett across the middle for a 26-yard gain. The junior signal-caller then found Lewis on the next three plays for gains of 12, 22 and nine yards to put the reserves on the Paschal 24. Grant was tackled passing for a four-yard loss, but then scrambled up the middle on the next play for a 14-yard gain and a first down at the Panther 14. After Monroe Henderson swept left end for a four-yard gain, Olynn Marshall came in to try a 27-yard field goal attempt with only seven seconds remaining in the half. The kick was off to the left, however. Longview's first team offense came in for only the first offensive series of the second half, driving 62 yards in nine plays and 4:36. Quarterback Victor McGee railed over from the one-yard line for his first six-pointer of the season. The big plays in the drive were 23 and 12-yard gallops by Smith on the first two snaps of the series. In two games, Longview's defense has now given up but 144 yards total offense. The Green Machine, however, with 338 yards it cranked out against Paschal, now has 801 in comparison. Paschal's lone score was set up when Longview punter Kevin Jones dropped the snap from center and was tackled for a 12-yard loss at the Lobo 24. The Lobo defensive line reached the Panther quarterback successive plays, however, for a total loss of 14 yards and then Paschal was caught holding and moved back 15 more yards tot eh 46, where the fateful punt went into the air. Again Cox showed his wealth of running backs, as nine different Lobos carried the ball from scrimmage, with seven gaining over 10 yards. |
