| LONGVIEW - It took seven games for Longview's offense to break loose, but when it did, John Tyler found out it was like catching water in a sieve - you might stop up one hole, but it'd just come pouring through another. Behind 461 yards total offense, the Lobos racked up their seventh consecutive win, a 35-0 blanking of arch-rival John Tyler here Friday night.
The Lobos rolled overland for 337 yards, with fullback Bobby Portley breaking away for 135 yards and reserves Sam Lanier and Dwight Powell added 72 and 70, respectively. But the key man in the Green Machine attack plan was quarterback Kenny Jackson. John Tyler came out keying on tailback Dinky Edwards. The Lions' plan worked, to a certain extent as Edwards picked up only 26 yards on 10 carries. But while the visitors were worrying about the tailback, Jackson was riddling the secondary with pin-point passing, finishing with seven completions in nine attempts of 115 yards and a touchdown. Right from the start, Longview showed the surplus crowd of some 9,500 who was going to dominate as the Lobos took the opening kickoff and drove 86 yards in 11 plays, with Lanier climaxing the drive from a yard out. Jim Tutt kicked the extra point. The Big play in the series was a Jackson pass to Greg Brown that covered 31 yards. Jackson himself scored the next touchdown, his first as a Lobo, with 2:28 remaining in the first half, culminating a 72-yard drive that took 11 plays. A mammoth 93-yard drive was the end result of the Lobos' first possession in the second half, with Portley sprinting in from 34 yards out for the touchdown. Tutt toed his third extra point through the uprights for a 21-0 lead with 7:07 left in the third period. Jackson found tight end Reno Hutchins in the end zone with a seven-yard aerial with 57 seconds left in the third stanza for the Lobos' fourth touchdown. Olynn Marshall kicked the extra point. Reserve quarterback Victor McGee hit another reserve, tight end Melvin Lewis, with 7:55 remaining in the game with a two-yard touchdown strike and Marshall again added the extra point to close out the scoring. It was Longview's fourth straight win over the Lions since Doug Cox took over the coaching reins. The win also gave the Lobos' the undisputed District 14-AAAA lead. Most of the credit for the Lobos' offensive splurge must go to the interior line, who opened up gaping holes for the Green Machine backs. |
