| LONGVIEW - All eyes were on Longview's Bobby Portley in the third quarter Friday night. And that's about all Dallas Carter could lay on the senior halfback as he raced 85 yards in that stanza alone to boost the Longview Lobos to a 12-8 comeback victory over the Cowboys here Friday night in both teams' season opener.
Portley wound up with a career-high 136 yards on just 21 totes, a 6.4 average, to bring the Lobos back from a 6-0 halftime deficit and keep their opening game undefeated streak alive at 15 in a row. Carter took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field, a total of 71 yards in just nine plays, the final 20 yards coming on a pass from Kevin Smith to Kevin Wiseman. On their next possession, Carter drove to the Lobo 13 before an incomplete fourth down pass turned the ball over to Longview, that was the extent of Carter's offensive showing. But it appeared that might be all the Cowboys' needed. Longview out gained Carter, 109-81 in the first half, but couldn't come up with the crucial play. Portley was the man the Lobos turned to. After taking the ball on their own 27 with the second half kickoff, Portley carried the pigskin eight out of 11 plays as the Green Machine roared in to score, with tailback Dinky Edwards covering the final yard with 7:29 remaining in the canto. Edwards scored again on the final play of the quarter after the Mean Green had forced Carter running back Jeff Fisher to cough up the ball at the Cowboy 15 and Arthur Brunett fell on the sphere, for the Lobos. Both extra points were blocked by the Cowboys. From then on, it was all Longview. Big defensive plays were made by Reno Hutchins, Richard Dickson, Eugene Williams, Greg Brown and Brunnett twice again as the Carter offense was stymied. After the first half, Carter was able to run off only 11 offensive plays. It was an auspicious start for an inexperienced young Lobo team after the first two periods. Longview wound up with 284 yards total offense, with all but three coming on the ground. Edwards, the slender speedster at tailback, was the workhorse along with Portley as he carried the ball 24 times for 82 yards. The two combined for 218 of the Lobos' yardage. Carter's erratic offensive showing came in the second half after looking strong in the final stanzas. In all, the Cowboys put the ball on the ground nine times, but lost only two to the Lobos. The Lobos' Mean Green defense gave up 118 yards on the Cowboys' first two drives, but Carter wound up with only 107 at the end of the game as the Lobo defense repeatedly poured through the line to throw the Cowboy backs for loss of yardage. |
