| LONGVIEW - Longview used a methodical offensive attack that featured seven different players that managed to score as the No. 2 ranked Lobos rolled to an easy, 44-6, District 14-AAAA victory over Lufkin here Friday night.
The Lobos, who captured the loop title easily with a perfect 10-0 season record, will meet Sherman last next in bi-district action. Sherman outlasted Richardson, 21-14, to advance into the playoffs. It is the third year in a row for the Lobos to appear in post-season action. It was evident from the beginning that the Lobos were the superior team as they took the opening kickoff and drove effortlessly down the field in 10 plays to score. Quarterback Tim Martin, who rushed for 55 yards and passed for 107, capped the 66-yard series with a 10-yard sprint around right end. Jim Tutt added the extra point. A fumble killed the next Lobo drive, but Lufkin couldn't manage anything and was forced to punt at the Lobo 37. The punt raveled only eight yards and the Lobos drove down to score again, this time on a one-yard run by Sherman Johnson. Bruce Thompson, who caught two passes from Martin for 87 yards, combined with the Lobo quarterback on a 65-yard bomb for the next Longview points. Later, Dinkey Edwards, John Henry Jones and Bobby Portley all scored on runs of six, one and seven yards, respectively. Tutt kicked six of six extra points while one field goal try failed on a bad snap. With only 4:16 left in the game, the Lobo punt coverage got into the scoring act. Hosea Taylor had punted 56 yards to the Lufkin one where the ball was downed, but the Lobos were called for offsides and the play was called back. So Taylor went back to punt again and got off just a 46-yarder to the Lufkin 16, where Panther Jimmy Kegler gathered the ball in on the bounce and angled back to the right sideline. He angled 16 yards back to the goalline, where the swift Thompson, who has been clocked at 9.8, pulled him down for a two-point safety. |
