LOBOS FUMBLE, STUMBLE BUT WIN, 19-12
MARSHALL - Longview nearly found out the hard way Friday night that you can't make costly mistakes and still win football games in District 14-AAAA.

But the No. 3 ranked Lobos came back to their senses late in the fourth quarter to halt a furious Marshall comeback to post a 19-12 win and clinch at least a tie for the District 14-AAAA title.

Longview had cruised to what seemed an easy 19-0 lead and appeared able to extend that margin at will late in the third quarter.

But then Marshall took over on its own 28 after a Lobo drive fizzled there on downs.

The Mavericks marched 72 yards in 10 plays, and using two major penalties for personal fouls against the Lobos, climaxing the drive with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Wesley Williams around the right end. The extra point kick was off to the right.

Then, disaster struck for the Lobos.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dinky Edwards took the ball a yard deep in the end zone and brought it out. He was hit by a crushing tackle at the Longview 15, and the ball popped all the way back to the six, where Marshall's Pap Watson fell on the wet pigskin.

Three plays later, Williams scored again as the Mavs had put 12 points on the board in a space of 1:11 and the Lobos led only 19-12 with 7:59 left in the game as the momentum had swung over to the hosts.

It wasn't over yet, however, as the Lobos were unable to move after the ensuing kickoff.

Longview used a three-yard blast by Dinky Edwards in the first quarter to get on the board first. The play culminated a 34-yard drive that was set up when Hosea Taylor fell on a fumbled snap.

On their next possession, the Green Machine moved 72 yards in 17 plays, with the big play being a 10-yard pass from Tim Martin to Kurt McCoy for a first down at the Mav 39. Sherman Johnson went in from five yards out with 1:20 in the half.

In the third period, Edwards went over from three yards away on a blast over right tackle.
