LONGVIEW - Quarterback Tim Martin ripped off 154 yards on just seven carries and John Henry Jones added 106 on 13 as the No. 3 ranked Longview Lobos rolled over Tyler Lee, 35-6, here Friday night.
The cold crisp night as perfect for football, as the Lobos rolled up 499 yards total offense and used big plays in the final half after wearing down the Raiders. Martin scored on runs off 88, four and one yards and reserved quarterback Kenny Jackson threw scoring strikes of 54 and 47 yards to Reno Hutchins and Bruce Thompson, respectively, in the final quarter to lead the Lobos to their sixth win without a loss. Lee drops to 2-4. Longview put together 220 yards total offense in the first quarter, all on the ground, but managed to score only seven points in the first 24 minutes, with that coming on Martin's 88 yard gallop around left end with 37 seconds left in the first quarter. But three lost fumbles and an interception kept the Lobos from putting any more points on the board during the first half. The last half was a different story, however, as Longview took the kickoff and drove 73 yards in 10 plays, with Martin going over from four yards out around right end, again without being touched. Jim Tutt added all five extra points for the Lobos. On their very next possession, the Green Machine tallied again. At the end of a 71 yard drive, Martin drove over from a yard away, with the big play in the drive being a 42 yard scamper by Jones. Jackson then came in after middle linebacker Donald Watkins intercepted his second pass of the night and put the Lobos in business at their own 40. Jones broke for six over right tackle, and then Jackson and tight end Reno Hutchins combined for the most sensational play of the night. Hutchins had floated out into the left flat where he was covered by Lee's John Wickware and Jackson forced the pass. Wickware tipped the ball, then Hutchins tipped it twice as Wickware and another Red Raider stumbled and fell and the Lobo end clutched the ball to his chest at the 20 and raced the rest of the away untouched. Jackson found wingback Bruce Thompson streaking down the right sideline just minutes later and laid a perfect pass into his arms with 3:52 left for the last Lobo score. Tyler Lee scored in the fourth quarter on a 15 yard pass from Bruce Henderson to tight end Randy Smelser. The conversion run failed. The win moved the Lobos into a tie for the District 14-AAAA lead with John Tyler, who won 12-7 over Marshall Friday night, and the two powerhouses meet next week in Rose Stadium in what should be one of the feature games in the state. |
